Abstract: Digitalised models can play a key role in the management of building life-cycle. This paper focuses on the challenges connected to the operation phase of buildings, when the adoption of BIM can make information retrieval and management easier and more efficient. More specifically, a BIM-based cyber-physical system for the automated monitoring of buildings during their regular operation is proposed and tested by means of a customised simulator. The system automatically works out key performance indicators based on the overall throughput effectiveness (OTE) metric, assessing both the overall efficiency and the efficiency of every sub-system integrated in the building. Thus, assessments of the contribution of every sub-system to the operation of the building are performed in real-time. In addition, the metric proposed can help manage multi-objective real-time control. The system is self-reconfigurable thanks to the self-similarity assumption of the computational structure that is designed as a holarchy of holonic systems. The first application reported in this paper shows that when intelligence is embedded at both lower and higher levels, it is possible to generate information that is then used to update the digital model, developed as a BIM. As a result, the digital model becomes the mirror of the physical system and stores the actual performances recorded by the building to support facility managers in making decisions.

2019 A topic recommender for journalists
INFORMATION RETRIEVAL
Autore/i: Cucchiarelli, Alessandro; Morbidoni, Christian; Stilo, Giovanni; Velardi, Paola
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The way in which people gather information about events and form their own opinion on them has changed dramatically with the advent of social media. For many readers, the news gathered from online sources has become an opportunity to share points of view and information within micro-blogging platforms such as Twitter, mainly aimed at satisfying their communication needs. Furthermore, the need to deepen the aspects related to news stimulates a demand for additional information which is often met through online encyclopedias, such as Wikipedia. This behaviour has also influenced the way in which journalists write their articles, requiring a careful assessment of what actually interests the readers. The goal of this paper is to present a recommender system, What to Write and Why, capable of suggesting to a journalist, for a given event, the aspects still uncovered in news articles on which the readers focus their interest. The basic idea is to characterize an event according to the echo it receives in online news sources and associate it with the corresponding readers' communicative and informative patterns, detected through the analysis of Twitter and Wikipedia, respectively. Our methodology temporally aligns the results of this analysis and recommends the concepts that emerge as topics of interest from Twitter and Wikipedia, either not covered or poorly covered in the published news articles.

Abstract: This work reviews and recaps some lessons learnt in the industrial cyber-physical systems playground to indicate a viable path towards an effective use of artificial intelligence in distributed automation. The holon concept is used as a pivotal tool towards a simplification of the design and implementation of architectures that exploit recursive patterns and self-similarities to keep the industrial systems-of-systems problem under control, whilst addressing the consistent coupling between the physical environmental and the reasoning processes. The Beer’s viable system model is used as an inspiration towards new viable holistic visions of the production system-of-systems.

Abstract: This paper gives a novel perspective about the role of the self-similarities in the modelling of system of systems with cyber-physical representation. With the adoption of virtual overlays of dynamically self-adapting holarchies, the emergent characteristics and behaviors of the information and automation systems are mapped into a recursive tree of autonomic components that can be typically realized through holonic multiagent systems. The nested computing structures that are used to achieve a productivity goal are kept simple by means of self-similarities. This simplification provides a viable methodology for the pervasive management and the automated programming of the holonic components. The technique described is suitable for a prompt adoption on a vast class of manufacturing, robotics, mechatronics, and facility management processes, whilst enabling a continuum between humans and machines. An advantage of the proposed method is its agnosticism with respect to most of the specific but heterogeneous technological means adopted in the already existent automation realizations.

Abstract: The complexity of cyber-physical systems (CPSs) poses new challenges in their design, model checking and maintenance. The hardware and software designers are in search, more than ever, for simple and interoperable approaches that render the complexity of CPSs a treatable matter. In this work, database language is suggested as an enabling technology and a lean technique to the purpose. An example with best available embedded database technology is conducted by means of a deployment test on tiny embedded electronics.

Abstract: Recent developments in cloud architectures and security concerns have originated new models of online storage clouds based on data dispersal algorithms. According to these lgorithms the data is divided into several slices that are distributed among remote and independent storage nodes. Ensuring confidentiality in this context is crucial: only legitimate users should access any part of information they distribute among storage nodes. We use parameterized Markov Decision Processes to model such a class of systems and Probabilistic Model Checking to assess the likelihood of breaking the confidentiality. We showed that a Small Model Theorem can be proven for a specific types of models, preserving PCTL formulae. Finally, we report the result of applying our methodology to feasibly assess the security of existing dispersed cloud storage solutions.

Abstract: Recent developments in cloud architectures have originated new models of online storage clouds based on data dispersal algorithms. According to these algorithms the data is divided into several slices that are distributed among remote and independent storage nodes. Ensuring confidentiality in this context is crucial: only legitimate users should access any part of information they distribute among storage nodes. To the best of our knowledge, the security analysis and assessment of existing solutions always assumes of homogeneous networks and honestbut-curious nodes as attacker model. We analyze more complex scenarios with heterogeneous network topologies and a passive attacker eavesdropping the channel between user and storage nodes. We use parameterized Markov Decision Processes to model such a class of systems and Probabilistic Model Checking to assess the likelihood of breaking the confidentiality. Even if, generally speaking, the parameterized model checking is undecidable, in this paper, however, we proved a Small Model Theorem that makes such a problem decidable for the class of models adopted in this work. We discovered that confidentiality is highly affected by parameters such as the number of slices and the number of write and read requests. At design-time, the presented methodology helps to determine the optimal values of parameters affecting the likelihood of a successful attack to confidentiality.

Abstract: Recent developments in cloud storage architectures have originated new models of online storage as cooperative storage systems and interconnected clouds. Such distributed environments involve many organizations, thus ensuring confidentiality becomes crucial: only legitimate clients should recover the information they distribute among storage nodes. In this work we present a unified framework for verifying confidentiality of dispersal algorithms against probabilistic models of intruders. Two models of intruders are given, corresponding to different types of attackers: one aiming at intercepting as many slices of information as possible, and the other aiming at attacking the storage providers in the network. Both try to recover the original information, given the intercepted slices. By using probabilistic model checking, we can measure the degree of confidentiality of the system exploring exhaustively all possible behaviors. Our experiments suggest that dispersal algorithms ensure a high degree of confidentiality against the slice intruder, no matter the number of storage providers in the system. On the contrary, they show a low level of confidentiality against the provider intruder in networks with few storage providers (e.g. interconnected cloud storage solutions).

2013 Open domain knowledge extraction: inference on a web scale
Proceedings of the 3rd International Conference on Web Intelligence, Mining and Semantics

Abstract: Though ontologies are considered central to foster the Semantic Web effort, their practical application on a Web scale is limited by the difficulty of building and maintaining high-coverage ontologies, for any of the almost unbounded number of social and technical domains mirrored on the Web. In this paper we present Open Knowledge Extraction (Open KE), a novel paradigm that creates a bridge between information retrieval, taxonomy learning and automated reasoning. Open KE builds on recently published algorithms for Open Information Extraction (Open IE) and automated taxonomy learning, which were shown able to extract information on a Web scale basis in an unsupervised manner. The key idea of Open KE is to generalize Open IE's lexicalized extractions with an automatically learned taxonomy. Lexicalized extractions are transformed in logic predicates, and used to populate a Semantic Model. An inference engine is then used to perform inductions and deductions. In this paper we describe the knowledge extraction workflow in its entirety, and apply it to a large-scale experiment in the domains of Artificial Intelligence and Virology.

2012 Semantically Interconnected Social Networks
SOCIAL NETWORK ANALYSIS AND MINING
Autore/i: Cucchiarelli, A.; D’Antonio, F.; Velardi, P.
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: Social network analysis aims to identify collaborations and helps people organize themselves through community participation and information sharing. The primary sources for social network modelling are explicit relationships such as co-authoring, citations, friendship, etc. However, to enable the integration of on-line community information and to fully describe the content and structure of community sites, secondary sources of information, such as documents, e-mails, blogs and discussions, can be exploited. In this paper we describe a methodology and a battery of tools to automatically extract from documents the relevant topics shared among community members and to analyse the evolution of the network also in terms of emergence and decay of collaboration themes. Experiments are conducted on a scientific network funded by the European Community, the INTEROP network of excellence, and on the United Kingdom research community in medical image understanding and analysis.

Abstract: The paper introduces a formalisation of opportunities, as situations that can be exploited obtaining valuable outcomes, in the context of the social networks, and defines a methodology for discovering opportunities through the analysis of the relation among network actors. The proposed methodology is then applied to the research-oriented networks, whose members share paper coauthorship or potential research interests. Finally, its validity is tested by evaluating the research collaborations opportunities exploited in the context of two distinct research communities, modelled through the analysis of their publications over time.

Abstract: The NoE (Network of Excellence) INTEROP is an instrument for strengthening the excellence of European research in interoperability of enterprise applications, by bringing together the complementary competences required to develop interoperability in a more global and innovative way. One of the main objectives of INTEROP was to build a so-called “Knowledge Map” (KMap) of partner competences, a competency management system used to perform a periodic diagnostic of the extent of the research collaboration and coordination among the NoE members. The aim was to monitor the status of research in the field of interoperability through a web-based platform that allows the user to retrieve information according to his/her actual need in a specific situation. In the KMap, the information is semantically indexed and retrieved through a domain ontology, which was semi-automatically created using a novel methodology, based on interleaved machine learning and collaborative validation phases. This paper describes the architecture of the KMap and provides a qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the advantages of a semantically indexed knowledge base as a means to improve information accessibility and network analysis.

Abstract: This paper presents a novel model for social network analysis in which, rather than analyzing the quantity of relationships (co-authorships, business relations, friendship, etc.), we analyze their communicative content. Text mining and clustering techniques are used to capture the content of communication and to identify the most popular themes. The social analyst is then able to perform a study of the network evolution in terms of the relevant themes of collaboration, the detection of new concepts gaining popularity, and the existence of popular themes that could benefit from better cooperation. The methodology is experimented in the domain of a Network of Excellence on enterprise interoperability, INTEROP.

Abstract: The need to extract and manage domain-specific taxonomies has become increasingly relevant in recent years. A taxonomy is a form of business intelligence used to integrate information, reduce semantic heterogeneity, describe emergent communities and interest groups, and facilitate communication between information systems. We present a semiautomated strategy to extract domain-specific taxonomies from Web documents and its application to model a Network of Excellence in the emerging research field of enterprise interoperability.

Abstract: Ontology evaluation is a critical task, even more so when the ontology is the output of an automatic system, rather than the result of a conceptualisation effort produced by a team of domain specialists and knowledge engineers. This paper provides an evaluation of the OntoLearn ontology learning system. The proposed evaluation strategy is twofold: first, we provide a detailed quantitative analysis of the ontology learning algorithms, in order to compute the accuracy of OntoLearn under different learning circumstances. Second, we automatically generate natural language descriptions of formal concept specifications, in order to facilitate per-concept qualitative analysis by domain specialists.
