2019 Inverted scanning microwave microscope for in vitro imaging and characterization of biological cells

Abstract: This paper presents an instrument called an inverted scanning microwave microscope (iSMM), which is capable of performing noninvasive and label-free imaging and characterization of intracellular structures of a live cell on the nanometer scale. In particular, the iSMM is sensitive to not only surface structures but also electromagnetic properties up to one micrometer below the surface. Conveniently, the iSMM can be constructed through straightforward conversion of any scanning probe microscope, such as an atomic force microscope and a scanning tunneling microscope, with a simple metal probe to outperform a traditional SMM in terms of ruggedness, bandwidth, sensitivity, and dynamic range. By contrast, the application of the traditional SMM to date has been limited to mainly surface physics and semiconductor technology because the traditional SMM requires a fragile and expensive probe and is incompatible with saline solution or live cells.

Abstract: A review of substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) components designed for the use in beam-forming networks working in X-Band is presented. The proposed devices are four-port and six-port couplers and magic tees for the network. The devices take full advantage of the use of SIW technology in order to reduce size, weight, and cost. The design processes of all devices are exposed, and the experimental results of prototypes show the feasibility of these solutions.

2018 Carbon nanofibers in polyurethane foams: Experimental evaluation of thermo-hygrometric and mechanical performance

Abstract: Polymer nanocomposites synergistically combine the good thermal properties of the hosting polymer matrix with the high mechanical performance of the fillers, providing a new class of materials with superior properties. The present study aims to evaluate in a multidisciplinary way the enhancement in mechanical and thermalhygrometric properties of low and medium density nanophased polyurethane (PUR) foams with either randomly oriented or aligned nanofibers as compared to the neat ones. To this aim, 1% weight of carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were homogeneously dispersed into polyol of PUR foam by an ultrasonic cavitation method. In parallel, a small amount of CNFs was functionalized in advance by a coprecipitation method so as to align them into the polymer matrix through an external low intensity magnetic field. SEM analyses were used to compare the microstructure of the neat and nanophased samples. Results have shown that the addition of carbon nanofibers in the foams products a closer structure with a more uniform size and shape. Moreover, functionalized CNFs play a significant role in regulating cells shape as well as strengthening cells walls. Mechanical test results also demonstrated that CNFs increase both strength and stiffness of the samples. The alignment of carbon nanofibers within medium density nanophased foams determines the highest mechanical properties. However, the more noticeable improvement in samples performance occurred in low density nanophased foams. Finally, carbon nanoparticles decrease the thermal conductivity and increase the resistance against water adsorption.

2018 Measuring zinc in biological nanovesicles by multiple analytical approaches

Abstract: Exosomes are nanovesicles known to mediate intercellular communication. Although it is established that zinc ions can act as intracellular signaling factors, the measurement of zinc in circulating nanovesicles has not yet been attempted. Providing evidence of the existence of this zinc fraction and methods for its measurement might be important to advance our knowledge of zinc status and its relevance in diseases. Exosomes from 0.5 ml of either fresh or frozen human plasma were isolated by differential centrifugation. A morphological and dimensional evaluation at the nanoscale level was performed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). Energy Dispersive X-Ray Microanalysis (EDX) revealed the elemental composition of exosomes and their respective total Zinc content on a quantitative basis. The zinc mole fraction (in at%) was correlated to the phosphorous mole fraction, which is indicative for exosomal membrane material. Both fresh (Zn/P 0.09 ± 0.01) and frozen exosomes (Zn/P 0.08 ± 0.02) had a significant zinc content, which increased up to 1.09 ± 0.12 for frozen exosomes when treated with increasing amounts of zinc (100–500 μM; each p < 0.05). Interestingly, after zinc addition, the Calcium mole fractions decreased accordingly suggesting a possible exchange by zinc. In order to estimate the intra-exosomal labile zinc content, an Imaging Flow Cytometry approach was developed by using the specific membrane permeable zinc-probe Fluozin-3AM. A labile zinc content of 0.59 ± 0.27 nM was calculated but it is likely that the measurement may be affected by purification and isolation conditions. This study suggests that circulating nano-vesicular-zinc can represent a newly discovered zinc fraction in the blood plasma whose functional and biological properties will have to be further investigated in future studies.

Abstract: Recently, near-field scanning microwave microscope has become popular in the characterization of materials, in particular, semiconductors on the nanometer scale. However, its application to biological structures is still at the embryo stage due to challenges in probing wet and soft samples with little dielectric contrast. In this work, we used our homemade scanning microwave microscope to overcome some of the challenges to demonstrate the imaging and characterization of isolated mitochondria in the frequency range 28–33 GHz.

Abstract: Near-field scanning microwave microscope (SMM) is an emerging tool in the family of scanning probe microscopes, having proven its usefulness in semiconductor characterization. SMM promises to be a powerful tool for biology and biophysics, but its use in such domains is still at an embryo stage. Our group developed a broadband SMM allowing spectroscopic and time-domain characterization [1], and tested it on several biological samples [2,3]. Abstract: Near field Scanning Microwave Microscopy (SMM) is emerging as an important complementary technique for the experimental characterization of biological samples, down to nano-scale. Working with cells or biological tissues poses several problems, especially if samples are to be scanned in-vivo in physiological environment (liquid buffer). Working with relaxed operating conditions, like scanning dried samples (or samples while drying), could be less difficult, but still highly challenging. For instance, whenever using STM-assisted SMM there may be conflicting constraints, like the use of low bias to avoid electrochemical reactions and to avoid amplifier saturation from ionic currents, which is in contrast with the need of high bias to allow the detection of non-conducting surfaces. From a more general point of view, the present work proposes a wide discussion on some of the main challenges of the SMM technique, in particular: achieving quantitative measurements during imaging, looking “underneath” the surface (subsurface probing), and imaging transient and dynamical phenomena. Both STM- and AFM-based implementations of microwave microscopy are considered for comparison. The calibration issue, a central point of any SMM measurement, is also addressed, by considering the capability of the system to provide quantitative data about the surface electrical features, and by trying to disentangle the sample information from topography or from unwanted electromagnetic signals – reflected back to the probe tip. In this context, a possible approach for time-domain calibration is described, starting from a broadband measurement which allows spectroscopic analysis and Time-Domain Reflectometry (TDR). Several examples about microwave scanning of biological scans are reported.

Abstract: Nanoparticles are receiving increasing attention as carriers of active drugs or biochemical signals. Among them, fullerene C₆₀ is particularly attractive since its cage structure helps it to carry other molecules and its lipophilicity helps it to penetrate through a cell membrane. This paper explores the potential of time-gated broadband near-field scanning microwave microscopy for detecting fullerene inside Michigan Cancer Foundation-7 breast cancer cells. It demonstrates measurement of relative variation of electromagnetic properties across the sample surface, while explaining the difficulty for measurement of absolute electromagnetic properties. The results are compared with scanning capacitance microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and scanning tunneling microscopy performed on the same samples.

Abstract: Fullerene C60 is a nanoparticle being actively investigated for possible applications in biology and medicine since, owing to its lipophilicity, it should be able to be incorporated in or to permeate across a cellular membrane. Once exposing cells to such nanoparticles, the problem becomes how to assess the actual presence of fullerene in cells. Here we used a home-made broadband near-field scanning microwave microscope, in both time and frequency domains, and a commercial scanning capacitance microscope to investigate the ability of fullerene to permeate MCF-7 breast cancer cells. We found that, while the electromagnetic properties of the cell membrane are changed by fullerene exposure, surface roughness is a more reliable indicator of fullerene exposure.

Abstract: Abstract—In this work, we imaged exosomes with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and broadband scanning microwave microscopy (SMM) simultaneously, using exosomes prepared by a new salivary isolation method. By transforming the frequency-domain data to the time domain with optimum time gating, exosome images of higher contrast and resolution were obtained by using SMM than by using STM or atomic force microscopy (AFM).

Abstract: A substrate integrated waveguide Magic Tee with very compact size and operating over a wide band is proposed. The circuit is made of two stacked substrates connected by cutting a small aperture between them. This solution presents slightly higher complexity compared to a single substrate magic Tee but it avoids the radiation losses because the circuit is completely closed. A simple and effective procedure is used to design the circuit. A prototype is built and experimental results show a good agreement with simulations.

2016 Broadband single-layer slotted array antenna in SIW technology

Abstract: A squint-less slot-antenna array (2D), built on a single substrate integrated waveguides (SIW), is shown. The effort needed for designing a suitable feeding network in SIW technology is justified in view of obtaining lightweight, low profile and low-cost antennas for many applications, including direct broadcast satellite. A proper definition of a “H”-shaped sub-array, made of four slot-pairs, is used to improve the input matching over a wide band. This choice allows remarkable simplification of the fabrication process, as the slots are cut directly in one of the metallic planes forming the SIW.

Abstract: Time-Domain Reflectometry (TDR) is a well-well known technique, widely used in several fields, such as signal integrity and remote sensing. Here we show that TDR can be conveniently used in the Near-Field Scanning Microwave Microscopy, regardless the apparent mismatch between timescales involved at nanoscale and the period of a microwave signal. The technique is demonstrated on Highly Oriented Pyrolitic Graphite (HOPG) and CVD graphene.

Abstract: —In this paper we discuss the application of a broadband Near-Field Scanning Microwave Microscope (SMM) to the imaging of biological samples, in particular mouse myotubes C2C12 and rabbit sarcomeres, highlighting the intriguing possibilities of the technique, and discussing the challenges in data interpretation. The system, developed by ourselves, exploits a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) coupled to a Vector Network Analyzer, providing simultaneous STM/SMM images.

Abstract: This paper presents an efficient segmentation of a filter made up of cylindrical multimodal cavities, coupled side by side, that leads to a reduced-complexity model. The latter is built by the combination of the Generalized Reactance Matrices of only two parallel cylindrical waveguides coupled through an aperture which the filter is segmented in. This allows to build the databases necessary for the optimization considering one coupling aperture at a time, thus reducing drastically the computation effort.

Abstract: We present a nano-patterning process for semiconducting polymeric composites that could potentially be utilized for the development of polymer-based data storage devices. Nanopatterning (writing) operates on the basis of the mechanical interaction between the electrically unbiased tip of an atomic force microscope and the surface of polymeric composite films. Via friction forces, the tip/sample interaction produces a local increase of molecular disorder in the polymer matrix, inducing a localized lowering in the conductivity of the organic semiconductor. Herein we suggest a figure of merit for quantifying the efficiency of pattern formation and we address the dependence of the writing process on the thermal annealing temperature of the composite film. Control experiments on composite films deposited on substrates with different roughness suggest that the writing effect is invariant to the roughness of the substrate. The potential storage density of the writing process depends on the tip curvature.

Abstract: A substrate integrated waveguide six-port directional coupler is designed and characterized. The circuit exploits a very compact size and good reflection and transmission characteristics, as it exhibits both return loss and isolation higher than 15 dB over a 13% bandwidth. The device is made by connecting all ports to a single junction which mixes all signals. Some prototypes have been built and experimental results show a very good agreement with simulations.

Abstract: This article presents a methodology that allows the determination of the matrix representation of a package. The methodology is based on a set of calibration measurements, picked up at the external pins of the package, of a set of known integrated circuits. The representation of the package can be used both for a correct measurement of the embedded devices and to improve the design of integrated circuits. The effectiveness of the technique is demonstrated by the de-embedding of a packaged passive integrated inductor and the design of a low noise amplifier. The measurement sets were obtained through computer simulations. The effects of added noise on data, like measurement errors, are also investigated, and an approximate methodology, able to reduce these effects, is suggested.

Abstract: This paper shows once more the accuracy and effectiveness of the Boundary Integral-Resonant Mode Expansion method in problems involving empty waveguides with nonstandard section and, in particular, multiridge waveguides. First, the high accuracy of the technique is proven through comparison with exact results, obtained in the case of sectorial waveguides. Then, the effectiveness of the method in the solution of discontinuity problems is shown through the example of a quadriridge dielectric-less transformer, designed to match a Faraday rotator to a circular waveguide.

Abstract: The design and characterization of a single-layer wideband substrate integrated waveguide 3-dB standalone directional coupler are described. The device exhibits a bandwidth of 2 GHz, ranging from 10.7 to 12.7 GHz, and both return loss and isolation better than 15 dB. The coupler has been built using a TACONIC RF-35 A2 substrate. A very good agreement between simulations and experimental results is obtained.

Abstract: This paper reports images of reproducible nanopatterns on hexagonal graphene flakes, produced by modulating the input power of a Near-Field Scanning Microwave Microscope, used at the same time for the characterization of the samples. We have studied the impact of different time exposures to the microwave field, and of different power levels. A possible explanation of the patterning mechanism is given by the heating-induced oxidation of the exposed graphene flakes. In order to confirm this assumption, we have developed a simplified model for the analysis of the heat distribution, and for the estimation of the temperature under the microscope probe. This effect could be the basis for an alternative nanolithographic technique.

Abstract: Significant efforts are being invested in investigation of graphene, as well as its nanopatterning and shaping, owing to its promising properties. Here we present a study of hexagonal graphene flakes, deposited on a copper foil by chemical vapor deposition. In particular we have exploited a Near-Field Scanning Microwave Microscope, and investigated the impact of the microwave power on the sample. From preliminary data, we found the possibility of inducing a localized destruction of the graphene by means of the near-field microwave probe. We exploited this effect to create a recognizable pattern on a flake. A discussion of the roles of concurrent physical phenomena is also presented.

Abstract: —A technique is described to measure the generalized scattering matrix (GSM) of a waveguide device whose ports are multimodal. The device-under-test is placed in between suitable converters, thereby transforming multimodal ports into monomodal ports. The needed data are then measured using a standard vector network analyzer. A dedicated algorithm is finally used to recover the multimode GSM of the device. The experimental validation is reported in this paper for rectangular and square waveguides showing excellent agreement between theory and measured results.

Abstract: The exceptional interest in improving the limitations of data storage, molecular electronics and optoelectronics has promoted the development of an ever increasing number of techniques used to pattern polymers at micro and nanoscale. Most of them rely on atomic force microscopy to thermally or electrostatically induce mass transport, thereby creating topographic features. Here we show that the mechanical interaction between the tip of the atomic force microscope and the surface of π-conjugated polymeric films produces a local increase of molecular disorder, inducing a localized lowering of the semiconductor conductivity, not associated to detectable modifications in the surface topography. This phenomenon allows for the swift production of low-conductivity patterns on the film surface at a speed exceeding 20 μm s−1; paths have a resolution in the order of the tip size (20 nm) and are detected by a conducting-atomic force microscopy tip in the conductivity maps.

Abstract: The paper illustrates the design guidelines of a dual-polarization directional coupler. This component is the building block of a dual polarization feeding network which has been conceived for space applications where mass and losses are the main issues. The design is based on a judicious choice of the coupling elements in order to guarantee acceptably large coupling and high isolation between orthogonal polarizations. An example concerning a Ku device is discussed.

Abstract: We propose a method to evaluate the electrical properties of nanoscale layered materials. This study is important for the potential application of these structures in light emitting diode electrodes. For this purpose we measure the reflection coefficient of a microwave signal recorded by a near-field Scanning Microwave Microscope. This method allows the non-contact measurement of the sheet resistance of the material under analysis. It provides detailed maps of the electrical properties of a micrometric area under test to assay its uniformity. In particular, we have applied this technique to a multilayer material composed by an Indium–Tin–Oxide film and few layer graphene.

Abstract: An extrinsic Fabry-Perot cavity in optical fiber is used to achieve surface imaging at infrared wavelengths. The micro-cavity is realized by approaching a single mode fiber optic with a numerical aperture NA to a sample and it is fed by a low-coherence source. The measurement of the reflected optical intensity provides a map of the sample reflectivity, whereas from the analysis of the reflected spectrum in the time/spatial domain, we disentangle the topography and contrast phase information, in the limit of nearly homogeneous sample with complex permittivity having Im(ε) << Real(ε). The transverse resolution is not defined by the numerical aperture NA of the fiber and consequently by the conventional Rayleigh limit (about 0.6λ/NA), but it is a function of the transverse field behavior of the electromagnetic field inside the micro-cavity. Differently, the resolution in the normal direction is limited mainly by the source bandwidth and demodulation algorithm. The system shows a compact and simple architecture. An analytical model for data interpretation is also introduced.

Abstract: Noninvasive, lens-free microscopy methods helps biologists to measure quantitative contrast phase imaging without damaging the cells. An extrinsic scanning micro-cavity in optical fiber is proposed to achieve surface imaging at infrared wavelengths. The micro-cavity is realized by approaching a single mode fiber with a numerical aperture NA to a sample and it is fed by a low-coherence source. The measurement of the reflected optical intensity provides a map of the sample reflectivity, whereas from the analysis of the reflected spectrum in the time/spatial domain, we disentangle the topography and contrast phase information. The latter describes the contrast variation of the reflected spectrum from the cavity due to changes in topography and surface refractive index. The interference of diffracted waves defines the transverse field behavior of the electromagnetic field inside the micro-cavity, affecting in this way the transverse resolution, that is not defined by the numerical aperture NA of the fiber and consequently by the conventional Rayleigh limit (about 0.6λ/NA). The resolution in the normal direction is limited mainly by the source bandwidth and demodulation algorithm. The system shows a compact and simple architecture.

Abstract: In this paper we demonstrate a general multimodal calibration technique allowing the experimental characterization of overmoded waveguides and waveguide devices. The proposed technique produces a measured Generalized Scattering Matrix, and proves to be robust and accurate, as demonstrated by the excellent agreement between measured and analytical data for a set of empty waveguides. As a byproduct, the technique allows the measurement of the propagation constant of waveguides having arbitrary cross-sections.

Abstract: In this work, we introduce a hybrid atomic-force/near-field scanning microwave microscope, exploiting the tomographic capabilities of the microwave microscopy to explore structures of relevant interest, namely, samples involving both biological and non-biological materials at the same time. In particular, we show imaging of C2C12 muscle cells grown in the presence of bundles of multi-walled carbon nanotubes: here, the microwave microscopy, by virtue of its tomographic potentiality, highlights how cells incorporate some nanotubes in their fibers.

2012 High Resolution Scanning Microwave Microscopy for Applications in Liquid Environment

Abstract: In this work, we demonstrate a hybrid scanning tunneling microscope/near field scanning microwave microscope featuring nanometric resolution in liquid environment. The system performs an ultra-broadband microwave analysis, since the frequency is swept (up to 50 GHz) for each spatial point of the sample under measurement. A conversion in time-domain allows to disentangle near-field and far-field probe-sample interactions. Results are reported for highly oriented pyrolitic graphite immersed in water, and demonstrate microwave nanometric resolution in spite of the presence of the losses induced by the aqueous environment.

Abstract: A smart design strategy for a planar X-band phased array antenna of connected dipoles with inherent filtering properties is described. As shown in previous works, the use of a common-mode rejection module is necessary in order to suppress undesired resonances excited when scanning on the E-plane. In the present solution, part of the filtering function is performed by the dipole, acting as first resonator, while the other part is integrated in the common-mode rejection module consisting in a planar hybrid-ring. As shown in the simulation results, scanning capabilities up to 45 degrees in the H-plane and up to 30 degrees for the E-plane are achievable with a fractional bandwidth of 21%.

Abstract: An architecture of a quadruplet for the realization of inductive waveguide filters, in which the by-pass coupling of the two central cavities is inductive, instead of the more classical capacitive solution, is proposed. This arrangement is quite handy because it makes easier the realization of very weak couplings, as those required in such schemes, without the need of expensive solutions. At the same time, one capacitive coupling is used to couple two electrically adjacent cavities of the quadruplet, possibly the more external ones, so that the coupling is large enough to be effectively implemented.

Abstract: A new compact design of a planar phased-array antenna with inherent frequency selectivity properties is presented. In previous works, starting from an array of connected dipoles, the design of a filtenna structure and a strategy for the suppression of common-mode resonances have been addressed. In the present approach, a compact design solution has been obtained by the integration of part of the filtering function in the common-mode rejection module, consisting in a planar hybridring. As proved by simulation results, scanning up to 45 ° for the H-plane and up to 30 ° for the E-plane is achieved with a relative bandwidth of 21%.

Abstract: This paper describes the use of the correlation maps in the Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) for the detection of near surface objects. This method is based on the de¯nition of bi-dimensional maps that describe the level and the nature of coherence between the received electromagnetic signals. The technique proposed provides the detection of objects, reducing the impact of the clutter and improving the image contrast by an appropriate combination of the information collected in the variance and time coherence of the received signals. The method has been tested in GPR developed by ourselves and described in detail. The implemented GPR system features a high dynamic vector network analyzer (VNA) and a mechanically scanned Vivaldi antenna; the scanning is bi-dimensional, so that A, B and C scans are available

Abstract: The design procedure of a linear phase filter suited for radar applications in L-band is presented.It can manage more than 1 KW of peak power, although it is built in a compact case by using coaxial resonators instead of usual rectangular ones. The design is performed by using the adaptive method invented by the authors. The filter was built and measured, showing good agreement between simulations and experiments.

Abstract: The present paper proposes a methodology that, starting from a set of calibration measurements picked up only at the external pins of the package, allows the determination of its representative matrix. Such a matrix can be used both for a correct measurement of the embedded device and in view of improving its design, by accounting for the effect of the package. The technique is demonstrated over a packaged passive integrated inductor.

Abstract: In this work we describe the application of a dual-channel scanning probe microscope performing simultaneously Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and wide-band Near Field Scanning Microwave Microscopy (wide-band SMM) - developed by ourselves- to a graphene flake. In our system we introduce a conversion in Time-Domain to discriminate the desired information, achieving high quality microwave images with nanometric resolution. The graphene sample is deposited on a substrate of SiO2 with an additional deposition of gold (a contact finger). The preliminary measurements seem to show evidence of localized change of impedance near the edge of the flake.

Abstract: This work describes a wide-band Near Field Scanning Microwave Microscopy (wide-band SMM) developed in our laboratory. The system is an STM-assisted, apertureless microscope featuring nanometric resolution. The system does not exploits resonators -even though parasitic resonances do exist anyway indeed- and records directly the reflection coefficient by means of a 67 GHz VNA. The resolution is improved by a method of tip etching, while the consequent reduced sensitivity is compensated by a post-processing algorithm

Abstract: Microwave Microscopy attracted the more recent and intensive efforts, owing to its capability to provide quantitative information about the local composition and the electromagnetic response of a sample. Nonetheless, the interpretation of microwave images remains a challenge as the electromagnetic waves interact with the sample and the surrounding in a multitude of ways and following different paths: microwave images are a convolution of all contributions. In this work we show that examining the time evolution of the electromagnetic waves allows to disentangle each contributions, providing images with striking quality and unexplored directions for the near-field microscopy.

Abstract: In this paper we describe how to define and build a set of known loads to be used in Near Field Microwave Microscopy. Such loads are necessary to set up a microwave calibration kit, enabling local quantitative measurements by the microscope. The proposed protocol is validated through the microscopy system we have recently developed, that combines a Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM) and a 70 GHz Vector Network Analyzer (VNA).

Abstract: The aim of this paper is to discuss the effects of the exposure to Extremely Low Frequency ElectroMagnetic Fields (ELF- EMFs) on non- and excitable cells using in vitro cell models, namely neuron-like cell line (PC12), glioblastoma-derived GL15 cells as glial model and C2C12 myocytes as muscle model, focusing our attention on standardized protocols for ELF-EMFs generation and exposure. A major issue in laboratory and likely in nature studies about possible biological effects of ELF waves is the difficulty in providing standard, reproducible environmental conditions. Hence, as part of the work we have developed an exposure system including a probing scanner, able to sample a given volume and to measure the time- varying magnetic field vector. The system allows detection, monitoring and removal of electromagnetic noise sources, as well as means to assess field homogeneity in terms of intensity and polarization

Abstract: In this work we describe a new dual-channel scanning probe microscope performing simultaneously Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (STM) and wide-band Near Field Scanning Microwave Microscopy (wide-band SMM). Our SMM system exploits the STM feedback to keep a suitable distance between probe and sample. The system is new because our SMM performs broadband measurements of the reflection coefficient across the STM probe by means of an external VNA with no resonant circuit. A post-processing algorithm reduces the noise by comparing images recorded at different close frequencies.

Abstract: An (N+1)-port junction endowed with complete rotational symmetry with respect to the first N ports is analyzed by a partial spectral decomposition of its S-matrix. This approach produces N/2 one-port boundary value problems, as well as a single two-port problem, which can be easily solved by means of standard full-wave simulators. The practical example of a coaxially fed 36-way power divider was easily analyzed by this method, and the results were nearly indistinguishable from those obtained by analyzing the device as a whole.

Abstract: The design of a rectangular waveguide 95 GHz (W-band) triplexer for ground radar systems is presented. The triplexer comprises three in-line filters with inductive irises as coupling elements and a manifold formed by three T-junctions. In particular, the scheme proposed is aimed at handling large powers and reducing losses. The triplexer was assembled and measured, showing very good agreement with the simulated results.

Abstract: The filter prototype of side-coupled coaxial filters, which we recently proposed, has been modified to suit an arrangement in which the coupling apertures are placed on the side opposite the coaxial end gaps. In this situation, the modified prototype fits the physical counterpart better, resulting in a further design simplification. In addition, the feeds have also been modeled and included into the prototype, thus enhancing the correspondence between the prototype and physical structure. A practical design, concerning a WIMAX application, shows the reliability of this solution.

Abstract: This paper introduces a general method for the analysis of the individual blocks forming a complex circuit by measurements or simulations carried out on the whole. This is useful in those situations where the analysis of the single blocks is difficult. Paradoxically, the analysis of more complex structures, which contain individual elements, as subcircuits is, in some circumstances, easier to perform or may even be the only way to acquire information about the individual elements. Under certain conditions, the elements can be combined to obtain different circuits according to classic segmentation technique. Owing to its formulation, the method is applicable to both simulation and measurement problems.

Abstract: A strategy for the full-wave analysis of slotted waveguide planar arrays is presented and demonstrated. The core of the method is a suitable segmentation of the antenna into two fundamental regions: an "internal" one, formed by the waveguide circuit, and the "external" one, consisting of the half space above the plate where the radiating slots are located. The internal region is further segmented into several blocks, connected to each other via their generalized admittance matrices (GAMs). The latter are calculated by means of either a commercial or a home made tool. The front plate is considered as a whole and analyzed by the moment method, in terms of modes of the slots. The latter are considered as short sections of waveguide whose length is just the conductor thickness, connecting the internal and external regions. The approach has been applied with success to a number of large planar arrays, both in rectangular and ridge waveguide.

Initially, the parameters of the prototype are explicitly derived from those of the classical Cohn’s inline filter, which is assumed as the starting point. The main feature of the proposed adaptive model is its one-to-one correspondence to the physical structure, making design feasible without additional optimizations or expensive tuning. Another feature lies in that the prototype is adapted to the structure along the way in the synthesis process. A practical example shows the merits and the accuracy of the proposed prototype. The relationships between the proposed method and existing techniques are also discussed
