2021 Algorithmically generated malicious domain names detection based on n-grams features

Abstract: Botnets are one of the major cyber infections used in several criminal activities. In most botnets, a Domain Generation Algorithm (DGA) is used by bots to make DNS queries aimed at establishing the connection with the Command and Control (C&C) server. The identification of such queries by monitoring the network DNS traffic is then crucial for bot detection. In this paper we present a methodology to detect DGA generated domain names based on a supervised machine learning process, trained with a dataset of known benign and malicious domain names. The proposed approach represents the domain names through a set of features which express the similarity between the 2-grams and 3-grams in a single unclassified domain name and those in domain names known as malicious or benign. We used the Kullback-Leibner divergence and the Jaccard Index to estimate the similarity, and we tested different machine learning algorithms to classify each domain name as benign or DGA-based (with both binary and multi-class approach). The results of our experiments demonstrate that the proposed methodology, which only exploits lexical features of domain names, attains a good level of accuracy and results in a general model able to classify previously unseen domains in an effective way. It is also able to outperform some of the state-of-the-art featureless classification methods based on deep learning.

2020 Increased Co-contraction Activity During Push-Off Phase of Walking in Healthy Women

Abstract: Research purpose: The assessment of possible gender-related differences in co-contraction activity of quadriceps femoris vs. hamstring muscles in able-bodied adults, during straight walking. Methods: Statistical gait analysis was performed on surface-EMG signals from vastus lateralis (VL), rectus femoris (RF), and medial hamstrings (MH) in 15 female (F-group) and 15 male (M-group) age-matched healthy adults. Co-contraction timing and occurrence frequency were provided. Numerous strides (around 450) were considered for each subject. Results: The same three co-contractions were found in F and M groups, irrespective of gender: during early stance (ES), push-off (PO) and swing (SW) phase. No relevant differences in co-contraction timing were detected between groups. An increase of occurrence frequency was observed in F-group for VL/MH co-activation during PO phase (21.9±13.6% vs. 11.3±8.6% of strides, p=2.5×10−3). Occurrence-frequency value was higher (p=6.9×10−3) in F-group (25.8±12.1%) than in M-group (17.3±14.2%) also for RF/VL co-activation in PO phase. These differences entailed a 74.1% increase of co-contraction events in females (p<0.05) in PO phase. Significance: The present study provides a reference frame for knee-muscle co-contractions during walking, differentiated for women and men. The concomitant analysis of timing and frequency of co-contraction occurrences denotes a significant increase in females of QF/hamstrings co-contraction recruitment in push-off. This suggests a female attempt to augment the level of knee-joint stabilization in the final phase of single support when control of balance is thornier.

2020 Recognition of gait phases with a single knee electrogoniometer: A deep learning approach

Abstract: Artificial neural networks were satisfactorily implemented for assessing gait events from different walking data. This study aims to propose a novel approach for recognizing gait phases and events, based on deep-learning analysis of only sagittal knee-joint angle measured by a single electrogoniometer per leg. Promising classification/prediction performances have been previously achieved by surface-EMG studies; thus, a further aim is to test if adding electrogoniometer data could improve classification performances of state-of-the-art methods. Gait data are measured in about 10,000 strides from 23 healthy adults, during ground walking. A multi-layer perceptron model is implemented, composed of three hidden layers and a one-dimensional output. Classification/prediction accuracy is tested vs. ground truth represented by foot–floor-contact signals, through samples acquired from subjects not seen during training phase. Average classification-accuracy of 90.6 ± 2.9% and mean absolute value (MAE) of 29.4 ± 13.7 and 99.5 ± 28.9 ms in assessing heel-strike and toe-off timing are achieved in unseen subjects. Improvement of classification-accuracy (four points) and reduction of MAE (at least 35%) are achieved when knee-angle data are used to enhance sEMG-data prediction. Comparison of the two approaches shows as the reduction of set-up complexity implies a worsening of mainly toe-off prediction. Thus, the present electrogoniometer approach is particularly suitable for the classification tasks where only heel-strike event is involved, such as stride recognition, stride-time computation, and identification of toe walking.

2020 Learning from Synthetic Point Cloud Data for Historical Buildings Semantic Segmentation

Abstract: Historical heritage is demanding robust pipelines for obtaining Heritage Building Information Modeling models that are fully interoperable and rich in their informative content. The definition of efficient Scan-to-BIM workflows represent a very important step toward a more efficient management of the historical real estate, as creating structured three-dimensional (3D) models from point clouds is complex and time-consuming. In this scenario, semantic segmentation of 3D Point Clouds is gaining more and more attention, since it might help to automatically recognize historical architectural elements. The way paved by recent Deep Learning approaches proved to provide reliable and affordable degrees of automation in other contexts, as road scenes understanding. However, semantic segmentation is particularly challenging in historical and classical architecture, due to the shapes complexity and the limited repeatability of elements across different buildings, which makes it difficult to define common patterns within the same class of elements. Furthermore, as Deep Learning models requires a considerably large amount of annotated data to be trained and tuned to properly handle unseen scenes, the lack of (big) publicly available annotated point clouds in the historical building domain is a huge problem, which in fact blocks the research in this direction. However, creating a critical mass of annotated point clouds by manual annotation is very time-consuming and impractical. To tackle this issue, in this work we explore the idea of leveraging synthetic point cloud data to train Deep Learning models to perform semantic segmentation of point clouds obtained via Terrestrial Laser Scanning. The aim is to provide a first assessment of the use of synthetic data to drive Deep Learning--based semantic segmentation in the context of historical buildings. To achieve this purpose, we present an improved version of the Dynamic Graph CNN (DGCNN) named RadDGCNN. The main improvement consists on exploiting the radius distance. In our experiments, we evaluate the trained models on synthetic dataset (publicly available) about two different historical buildings: the Ducal Palace in Urbino, Italy, and Palazzo Ferretti in Ancona, Italy. RadDGCNN yields good results, demonstrating improved segmentation performances on the TLS real datasets.

Abstract: Point clouds obtained via Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) surveys of historical buildings are generally transformed into semantically structured 3D models with manual and time-consuming workflows. The importance of automatizing this process is widely recognized within the research community. Recently, deep neural architectures have been applied for semantic segmentation of point clouds, but few studies have evaluated them in the Cultural Heritage domain, where complex shapes and mouldings make this task challenging. In this paper, we describe our experiments with the DGCNN architecture to semantically segment historical buildings point clouds, acquired with TLS. We propose a variation of the original approach where a radius distance based technique is used instead of K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) to represent the neighborhood of points. We show that our approach provides better results by evaluating it on two real TLS point clouds, representing two Italian historical buildings: the Ducal Palace in Urbino and the Palazzo Ferretti in Ancona.

2020 Point cloud semantic segmentation using a deep learning framework for cultural heritage

Abstract: In the Digital Cultural Heritage (DCH) domain, the semantic segmentation of 3D Point Clouds with Deep Learning (DL) techniques can help to recognize historical architectural elements, at an adequate level of detail, and thus speed up the process of modeling of historical buildings for developing BIM models from survey data, referred to as HBIM (Historical Building Information Modeling). In this paper, we propose a DL framework for Point Cloud segmentation, which employs an improved DGCNN (Dynamic Graph Convolutional Neural Network) by adding meaningful features such as normal and colour. The approach has been applied to a newly collected DCH Dataset which is publicy available: ArCH (Architectural Cultural Heritage) Dataset. This dataset comprises 11 labeled points clouds, derived from the union of several single scans or from the integration of the latter with photogrammetric surveys. The involved scenes are both indoor and outdoor, with churches, chapels, cloisters, porticoes and loggias covered by a variety of vaults and beared by many different types of columns. They belong to different historical periods and different styles, in order to make the dataset the least possible uniform and homogeneous (in the repetition of the architectural elements) and the results as general as possible. The experiments yield high accuracy, demonstrating the effectiveness and suitability of the proposed approach.

Abstract: Digit(al)isation of Cultural Heritage is a multidimensional process that helps in the rescue of European Cultural Identity, and the paradigm of Digital Cultural Heritage (DCH) is a valid instrument for social and cognitive inclusion of museum visitors. In light of disseminating and validating new paradigms for the enjoyment and exploitation of Cultural Heritage (CH) artifacts, this chapter shows main first results from CIVITAS (ChaIn for excellence of reflectiVe societies to exploit dIgital culTural heritAge and museumS). The project develops virtual/augmented environments, through the multisensorial interaction with virtual artworks, to satisfy needs and overcome limitations in a larger CH scenario, applying a bottom-up approach. The research presented show a robust and interdisciplinary approach applied to Ducal Pace at Urbino: key activities and faced challenges demonstrated to test cross-fertilization strategies, involving multilayered issues.

Abstract: In the last decades, Computer Engineering has shown an impressive development and has become a pervasive protagonist in daily life and scientific research. Databases and Artificial Intelligence represent two of the major players in this development. Today, they are quickly converging towards a new, much more sophisticated and inclusive, paradigm, namely Cognitive Computing. This paradigm leverages Big Data and Artificial Intelligence to design approaches and build systems capable of (at least partially) reproducing human brain behavior. In this paradigm, an important role can be also played by Mathematical Programming. Cognitive systems are able to autonomously learn, reason, understand and process a huge amount of extremely varied data. Their ultimate goal is the capability of interacting naturally with their users. In the last 50 years, UNIVPM has played a leading role in scientific research in Databases and Artificial Intelligence, and, thanks to the acquired expertise, is going to play a key role in Cognitive Computing research in the future.

2019 A deep learning approach to EMG-based classification of gait phases during level ground walking

Abstract: Correctly identifying gait phases is a prerequisite to achieve a spatial/temporal characterization of muscular recruitment during walking. Literature reported few machine-learning-based approaches for gait-phases classification from surface electromyographic (sEMG) signal during treadmill walking. To our knowledge, no attempts were made during ground walking in daily-life conditions. A methodology for classification of stance/swing and prediction of foot-floor-contact signal during ground walking in conditions similar to daily life is proposed here, based on the application of Multi-Layer Perceptron models to sEMG signal alone. sEMG were acquired from eight lower-limb muscles in about 13.000 strides from 23 healthy adults, during ground walking, following an eight-shaped path including natural deceleration, reversing, curve, and acceleration. Classification and prediction accuracy were tested vs. the ground truth, represented by the basographic signal provided by three foot-switches, through samples not used in the learning phase, coming from both the same group of subjects used to generate the learning set (LS-Test) and brand-new subjects (unlearned, US). Results showed an average classification accuracy (± SD) over 23 folds of 94.9 ± 0.3 for LS-test and 93.4 ± 2.3 for US. Prediction of foot-floor-contact signal was quantified in terms of timing of heel strike and toe off: mean (over ten folds) absolute difference between predictions and footswitch data for UL was 15 ± 17 ms and 36 ± 22 ms for heel-strike and toe off, respectively. The suitable performance achieved by the proposed method suggests that it could be successfully used to automatically classify gait phases and predict foot-floor-contact signal from sEMG signals during ground walking in daily-life conditions.

Abstract: The way in which people gather information about events and form their own opinion on them has changed dramatically with the advent of social media. For many readers, the news gathered from online sources has become an opportunity to share points of view and information within micro-blogging platforms such as Twitter, mainly aimed at satisfying their communication needs. Furthermore, the need to deepen the aspects related to news stimulates a demand for additional information which is often met through online encyclopedias, such as Wikipedia. This behaviour has also influenced the way in which journalists write their articles, requiring a careful assessment of what actually interests the readers. The goal of this paper is to present a recommender system, What to Write and Why, capable of suggesting to a journalist, for a given event, the aspects still uncovered in news articles on which the readers focus their interest. The basic idea is to characterize an event according to the echo it receives in online news sources and associate it with the corresponding readers' communicative and informative patterns, detected through the analysis of Twitter and Wikipedia, respectively. Our methodology temporally aligns the results of this analysis and recommends the concepts that emerge as topics of interest from Twitter and Wikipedia, either not covered or poorly covered in the published news articles.

Abstract: Time is a useful dimension to explore in text databases especially when historical and factual information is concerned. As documents generally refer to different events and time periods, understanding the focus time of key sentences, defined as the time the content refers to, is a crucial task to temporally annotate a document. In this paper, we leverage a bag of linked entities representation of sentences and temporal information from Wikipedia and DBpedia to implement a novel approach to focus time estimation. We evaluate our approach on sample datasets and compare it with a state of the art method, measuring improvements in MRR.

Abstract: Abstract Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate and prove the feasibility of a semantic web (SW) based approach to textual encoding. It aims to discuss benefits and novel possibilities with respect to traditional XML-based approaches.Design/methodology/approach - The markup process can be seen as a task of knowledge representation where elements such as words, sentences and pages are instances of conceptual classes forming a semantic network. An ontology web language ontology for textual encoding has been developed, capturing structural and grammatical aspects. Different approaches and tools to query the encoded text are investigated.Findings - resource description framework (RDF) is powerful and expressive enough to fulfil tasks traditionally done in XML as well as to enable new possibilities such as collaborative and distributed textual encoding and the use of ontology-based reasoning in text processing and querying. While the encoding of overlapping hierarchies through the use of existing approaches is often complex and leads to idiosyncratic solutions, this problem is naturally solved using SW languages.Research limitations/implications - To make the approach suitable for widespread adoption, further work is required both in ontologies modelling and in applications (e.g. markup editing).Practical implications - The prototype implementation imports existing encoded texts, transforms them into RDF-based markups and uses SW query languages to answer cross-hierarchy queries. Existing tools (reasoners, search and query engines, etc.) can be used immediately.Originality/value - This methodology enables distributed interoperability and reuse of previous encoded results and opens the way to novel collaborative textual markup scenarios.

Abstract: The Geospatial Web will have a profound impact on managing knowledge, structuring workflows within and across organizations, and communicating with like-minded individuals in virtual communities. The enabling technologies for the Geospatial Web are geobrowsers such as NASA World Wind, Google Earth and Microsoft Live Local 3D. These threedimensional platforms revolutionize the production and consumption of media products. They not only reveal the geographic distribution of Web resources and services, but also bring together people of similar interests, browsing behavior or geographic location. This book summarizes the latest research on the Geospatial Web’s technical foundations, describes information services and collaborative tools built on top of geobrowsers, and investigates the environmental, social and economic impacts of geospatial applications. The role of contextual knowledge in shaping the emerging network society deserves particular attention. By integrating geospatial and semantic technology, such contextual knowledge can be extracted automatically – for example, when processing Web documents to identify relevant content for customized news services. Abstract: We present an architecture that provides semantic Web annotations of sound clips described by MPEG-7 audio descriptions. The great flexibility of the MPEG-7 standard makes especially difficult to compare descriptions coming from heterogeneous sources. To cope with this, the architecture would first obtain "normalized" versions of the audio descriptions using different adaptation techniques. Once in a "normalized" format, descriptions can be then projected into uniform and semantically relevant vector spaces, ready to be processed by a variety of well known computational intelligence techniques. As higher semantic results are then available, these can be exported as interoperable (RDF) annotations about the resource that was originally fed into the system. As novel aspect, through the use and interchange of MPEG-7 descriptions, the framework allows building applications (e.g. classificators) which can provide annotations on distributed audio resource sets.
