2018 Collaboration for innovation and project failure. A dynamic analysis
ECONOMICS OF INNOVATION AND NEW TECHNOLOGY
Autore/i: Guzzini, Enrico; Iacobucci, Donato; Palestrini, Antonio
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to investigate the hypothesis that there is a complex and bidirectional relation between collaboration and failure in innovation projects. On the one hand, collaboration in innovative activities may increase the likelihood of project failure. At the same time, the failure in innovation projects may induce the firm to collaborate in order to overcome the problems that determined the failure of innovation projects (induced collaboration). Up to now, we are not aware about the existence of any empirical paper analysing the interaction between these two mechanisms. This paper aims at filling this gap by providing a motivation for the induced collaboration and testing its empirical relevance in a dynamic framework. The empirical analysis is carried out by using two consecutive German Community Innovation Surveys referring to the period 2006–2010. The empirical results support the hypothesis of a bidirectional causal relationship between collaboration and failure.

2017 Project failures and innovation performance in university–firm collaborations
THE JOURNAL OF TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER
Autore/i: Guzzini, Enrico; Iacobucci, Donato
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The main aim of this paper is to analyze the factors affecting the likelihood of the failure of innovation projects (delay or abandonment) and the relation between project failure and innovation performance. Specific emphasis is given to the role of collaboration in general, and to collaboration with universities and public research institutions (PRI) in particular. We use data about German firms for the period 2002–2005, merging the results of two successive Community Innovation Surveys. We show that collaboration is associated with the Delay and, to a lesser extent, the Abandonment of innovation projects. Collaboration with PRI does not increase either the likelihood of project failure or the innovation performance, compared to collaboration with firms. We also show that there is a positive relation between the delay of projects and the innovation performance of firms. The occurrence of delays can be considered as a sort of ‘necessary’ cost in order to raise the level of innovation performance.

2017 Gruppi di impresa e distretti industriali nel nordest
ECONOMIA E SOCIETÀ REGIONALE. OLTRE IL PONTE
Autore/i: Cainelli, Giulio; Giannini, Valentina; Iacobucci, Donato

2016 Introduction to the special issue: Universities as interactive partners
SCIENCE & PUBLIC POLICY
Autore/i: Carvalho de Mello, José Manoel ; De Fuentes, Claudia ; Iacobucci, Donato
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: In a knowledge economy universities are expected to play a more active role in the creation and dissemination of new knowledge. The effectiveness of universities in playing this role is highly dependent on the country-specific institutional context and on the regional framework. Despite the abundant literature on technology transfer by universities, there is still room for a better understanding of how these specificities impact on the ability of universities to engage in effective interactions with industry and how policy-makers may favor these interactions. The main aim of this special section is to fill this gap by providing empirical analysis referring to an array of developed and emerging countries (Brazil, Italy, Finland, Sweden, and Thailand) which are trying to increase the ability of the university system to interact with industry.

2016 The dark side of collaborations for innovation: Are collaborations with universities darker than those with other partners?
L'INDUSTRIA
Autore/i: Guzzini, Enrico; Iacobucci, Donato
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: In addition to its advantages, collaboration for innovation might increase the cost of innovation because of leakages of strategic information, appropriability problems and coordination difficulties. When collaborating with public research institutions (pris) the latter problem is expected to be more severe, thus raising the probability of project failure. The aim of this paper is to investigate whether and to what extent collaboration for innovation raises the probability of failure, i.e. delay or abandonment of innovative projects. It also aims to verify whether and to what extent collaboration with PRIs increases the likelihood of failure. We use data from the fourth Italian Community Innovation Survey (cis 4), which collected data for the three-year period 2002-2004. The empirical results support the hypothesis that collaboration significantly affects the probability of delay or abandonment of innovative projects. However, collaboration with PRIs does not increase the likelihood of failure compared to collaboration with other partners. Moreover, we find that delays are influenced by cost factors (such as lack of financial resources) or knowledge factors (such as lack of qualified personnel) while abandonment is significantly associated with market factors (such as uncertain demand).

2016 Local variety and firm diversification: An evolutionary economic geography perspective
JOURNAL OF ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY
Autore/i: Cainelli, Giulio; Iacobucci, Donato
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The aim of this article is to investigate whether and how local agglomeration forces-related and unrelated variety-influence firm diversification. Using a large dataset of 5112 Italian manufacturing business groups for the year 2001, and estimating Tobit models, we show the 'consistency' between the patterns of firm diversification and that of the local system in which the firm is located. Specifically, firms located in local systems dominated by unrelated variety are more likely to show unrelated diversification patterns, while firms located in local systems dominated by related variety are more likely to show related diversification patterns. This supports the Evolutionary Economic Geography prediction of firm similarity 'within' the same local system, and firm heterogeneity 'between' different local systems.

2016 La ‘Smart Specialization Strategy’ delle regioni italiane e le relazioni fra ambiti tecnologici
SR SCIENZE REGIONALI
Autore/i: Iacobucci, Donato; Guzzini, Enrico
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The Smart Specialization Strategy requires regions to identify links between technological domains within the same region (relatedness) and between different regions (connectivity). Besides providing a first analysis of technological domains of Italian regions, this paper shows that Italian regions generally neglected the analysis of relatedness and connectivity. We argue that this underestimation is due to the absence of a consolidated methodology to detect such links and to the lack of data and information to carry out this analysis.

2016 Relatedness and connectivity in technological domains: missing links in S3 design and implementation
EUROPEAN PLANNING STUDIES
Autore/i: Iacobucci, Donato; Guzzini, Enrico
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: European guidelines for the smart specialization strategy (S3) required regions to identify synergies between technological domains within the same region (relatedness) and potential links of the chosen domains with other European regions (connectivity). The aim of this paper is to analyse if and to what extent regions have been able to implement such indications and the methodology adopted. The paper is based on a content analysis of the S3 documents approved by Italian regions. The empirical analysis reveals that only in a few cases regions considered relatedness and connectivity of technological domains. Moreover, the methods adopted by regions to detect potential links between the specialization domains is based more on anecdotal evidence than on the application of theoretically grounded methodologies. The paper suggests that the explanation for this omission is the absence of a consolidated methodology to deal with these issues and proposes some preliminary guidelines to overcome the problem.

2015 How to evaluate the impact of academic spin-offs on local development: an empirical analysis of the Italian case
THE JOURNAL OF TECHNOLOGY TRANSFER
Autore/i: Iacobucci, Donato; Micozzi Alessandra
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The paper proposes a framework to evaluate the impact of academic spin-offs at the local level. Spin-off creation is the most complex way of commercializing academic research, compared to patenting and R&D collaborations, but has the highest potential impact on the local context. We develop a framework that takes into account the direct and indirect impacts of spin-offs. In the empirical part of the paper we apply this framework to Italian spin-offs set up between 2000 and 2012, and to a sample of Università Politecnica delle Marche spin-offs. The empirical analysis shows that, measured in quantitative terms, the impact of spin-offs on the local economy is quite small. However, this depends on the characteristics of the local economy, and there are some indirect effects that should be considered in both the short and longer terms.

2014 Designing and implementing a smart specialisation strategy at regional level: Some open questions
SR SCIENZE REGIONALI
Autore/i: Donato Iacobucci
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to discuss some of the theoretical underpinnings and implementation problems of the RIS3. The analysis is carried out by reviewing the available literature on RIS3 and the proposals of 36 EU regions. The RIS3 approach requires the concentration of R&D efforts in a few domains. It requires a variable mix between research and innovation policy according to the region’s innovative capability. The paper discusses the theoretical and practical issues arising when trying to identify links between technological domains within the same regions and between different regions. The paper also questions the emphasis of the RIS3 on the bottom-up approach given that the design of a ‘strategy’ must necessarily rely, at least at the beginning, on a topdown approach. Suggestions are made on how to improve the design and implementation of the RIS3

2014 Business Group Affiliation and R&D
INDUSTRY AND INNOVATION
Autore/i: Enrico Guzzini; Donato Iacobucci
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: This paper analyzes whether belonging to a business group enhances firms' propensity for and intensity of R&D based on the greater opportunities to finance and co-ordinate R&D strategies and internalize knowledge spillovers. Compared with the existing literature, this paper has the following novelties: (a) it examines how the organization and diversification of business groups influence the R&D investment of affiliated firms; (b) it analyzes the role of R&D spillovers among affiliated firms; and (c) it distinguishes between propensity for and intensity of R&D. We find that less diversified groups are more likely to centralize R&D, while in more diversified groups firms are more likely to be autonomous. We find that controlled companies are more likely to benefit from knowledge spillovers than firms at the head of the group. Finally, we find that R&D autonomy is significantly associated with both a higher propensity for and intensity of R&D in controlled companies.

2014 Ownership as R&D incentive in business groups
SMALL BUSINESS ECONOMICS
Autore/i: Enrico Guzzini; Donato Iacobucci
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: Small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are supposed to be less likely to conduct formal R&D because of the lack of financial resources, weaker competencies, and the absence of scale and scope economies. These limitations may be overcome when an SME belongs to a business group. Empirical studies have shown that firms belonging to business groups have a higher propensity to engage in R&D. We demonstrate that this higher propensity depends on the ownership of controlled companies, besides the presence of coordination mechanisms. We develop a model, and we empirically test its predictions using a data set of Italian SMEs operating in the manufacturing sector. From the model we derive three main implications: (1) there is no difference in R&D propensity between standalone firms and firms at the bottom of groups; (2) head and intermediate firms have a higher R&D propensity than standalone firms and firms at the bottom of the group; (3) the intensity of R&D depends on the ownership of controlled firms and on their size. Overall, the results of the empirical analysis are in accordance with the implications of the model.

2012 Entrepreneurship education in Italian universities: trend, situation and opportunities
EDUCATION & TRAINING
Autore/i: Donato Iacobucci; Alessandra Micozzi
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to provide an analysis of the present situation and recent evolution of entrepreneurship education in Italian universities and to discuss whether these courses and curricula match the demand for entrepreneurial competences. Design/methodology/approach – The empirical analysis is based on a census of entrepreneurship courses and curricula run by universities. The information collected through the internet refers to the academic years 2003-2004 and 2009-2010. Findings – Compared with the situation observed in the USA and in other European countries, entrepreneurship education in Italy is rather “underdeveloped”. Only a few universities have courses or specific curricula dedicated to entrepreneurship. The courses are concentrated within business faculties while very few exist in science and engineering faculties. The slow pace with which Italian universities are keeping up with the global trend in entrepreneurship education at university level seems in vivid contrast with the need for the Italian economy to change its industry structure from the so-called “traditional” to “high-tech” sectors. The paper discusses the reasons for this situation.

2012 Agglomeration, Related Variety and Vertical Integration
ECONOMIC GEOGRAPHY
Autore/i: Giulio Cainelli; Donato Iacobucci
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: Several recent studies have investigated the relationship between the geographic concentration of production and vertical integration, based on the hypothesis that the spatial agglomeration of firms in the same industry facilitates input procurement, thereby reducing the degree of vertical integration. This article contributes to this debate in two ways: first, we focus on interindustry vertical integration, and second, we consider the effects on vertical integration of unrelated and vertically related variety at the local level. The latter was measured using information from input-output tables and captured the opportunities for outsourcing within the local system. A data set of 24,663 Italian business groups in 2001 was used to estimate Tobit models to investigate the influence of vertically related variety and other agglomeration forces on the degree of vertical integration of groups. We found that vertical integration is influenced by industry specialization at the local level and that higher vertically related variety reduces the need for firms to integrate activities, since they have more opportunities to acquire intermediate goods and services within the local system. We analyze the manufacturing and different macroareas and show that this relationship is also influenced by technology and differences in the organization of economic activities at the local level.

2011 Fostering entrepreneurship in academic spin-offs
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ENTREPRENEURSHIP AND SMALL BUSINESS
Autore/i: Iacobucci D.; Iacopini A.; Micozzi A.; Orsini S.
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: Academic spin-offs are new companies that evolve out from universities as a result of the process of technology transfer from research to commercialisation of new products or services. This paper analyses the experience of Italian spin-offs, from their first introduction in 1999, with specific regard to the following aspects: the early growth, the governance structure and the entrepreneurial orientation. The empirical analysis refers to a sample of 160 spin-offs set up between 2000 and 2005. Quantitative analysis is based on annual reports after two, four and six years from set up. Quantitative data are supplemented with qualitative information collected from direct interview with owners and managers of spin-offs. The paper highlights the difficulties of most spin-offs in transforming the initial idea in a sustainable business. This is the result, among other things, of the lack of entrepreneurial orientation by the researchers promoting and managing the spin-offs.

2011 Business groups and the boundaries of the firm
MANAGEMENT DECISION
Autore/i: Cainelli G.; Iacobucci D.
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: This paper aims to show that the business group - i.e. the set of firms under common ownership and control - is the most appropriate unit to study the behavior and organization of firms and define their boundaries. Particular emphasis is given to notions such as unitary direction - i.e. the influence over strategic decisions - and administrative co-ordination which allow owners to exercise supervision and authority over the controlled companies. Design/methodology/approach: Given these aims the paper adopts an interdisciplinary perspective that relies on economics, management and law. This multidisciplinary approach is necessary for analyzing the different aspects characterizing business groups in terms of ownership, control, economic synergies between firms and internal organizational mechanisms. To support the propositions, data and information from various sources are used, ranging from official statistics on the firm's population, to sample surveys, case studies and juridical evidence. The use of different sources is justified not only by the interdisciplinary nature of the problem but also by the lack of systematic statistical evidence on the phenomenon of business groups. Findings: The authors suggest that when a company is part of a group, the business group rather than the individual company is the most appropriate "unit" for analyzing the organization and behavior of firms. This does not deny that in some cases it can be worthwhile using the legal boundary as the appropriate unit; however, most of the empirical analyses about firms consider the legal boundary without considering whether companies are independent or part of a business group. Originality/value: The authors show that forms of unitary direction and administrative co-ordination are common in business groups; these forms can be assimilated to the internal organization of firms. For this reason they propose that the group rather than the individual company is the appropriate unit to delimit the boundary of the firm. In this sense, their main conclusion is that not considering the business group underestimates the actual firm boundaries

2010 The Growth of Business Groups by Habitual Entrepreneurs: The Role of Entrepreneurial Teams
ENTREPRENEURSHIP THEORY AND PRACTICE
Autore/i: D. IACOBUCCI; ROSA P
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: This article reports the analysis of case studies of portfolio entrepreneurs that suggests that one of the main reasons for the formation and expansion of business groups is the need to create an entrepreneurial team, which is achieved by giving minority shares in the new ventures to others, mainly former employees. This enhances entrepreneurs’ ability to grow and diversify the businesses under their control without compromising their ownership control of the overall business group. The article identifies and discusses the different types of entrepreneurial teams developed by portfolio entrepreneurs: joint ventures with established entrepreneurs, employee involvement, and intrapreneurship. The latter two types were specifically interesting in studying situations where there was a dominant entrepreneur and associate entrepreneurs. The article enhances the theoretical and empirical understanding of how growth is achieved in the small firms sector through business group formation, and sheds insights on how entrepreneurial team dynamics operate in multiple business contexts.

Abstract: This paper is a first attempt to analyse the relationship between spatial agglomeration and firms’ organizational structures. It takes advantage of a new and large data set at firm and business group level that allows one to analyse the differences in the presence and characteristics of business groups between districts and non-district areas. Overall, the results confirm the hypothesis that spatial agglomeration of business activities influences firms’ organization. Groups are more widespread in industrial districts than in non-district areas; moreover, groups in industrial districts are less diversified and more spatially concentrated than groups outside industrial districts.

2005 Growth, diversification and business cluster formation in entrepreneurial firms
SMALL BUSINESS ECONOMICS
Autore/i: D. IACOBUCCI; ROSA P.
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: Recent empirical research has demonstrated that the growth process of entrepreneurial firms is frequently achieved through the formation of business groups: i.e. a set of companies run by the same entrepreneur (or entrepreneurial team). This has been hypothesised as result of a growth process by diversification of the original activity. This entrepreneurial growth process offers an alternative explanation for the formation of business Groups, than that arising from managerial efficiency and expediency. The main aim of the article is to explore group formation through entrepreneurial diversification using a sample of high growth entrepreneurial firms. The analysis demonstrates that the running of a group of companies by the same entrepreneur is not only induced by the geographical extension of their operation and by diversification but also by the differentiation policy aimed at serving different market segments within the same sector. This seems to contrast with the diversification policy and organisational setting of large, managerial firms.

1997 Small Firm Investment and Financing Decisions: An Option Value Approach
SMALL BUSINESS ECONOMICS
Autore/i: Giorgio Calcagnini; Donato Iacobucci
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: This paper reviews and discusses recent developments undergone by investment theory, and tries to address both financial and real decisions within an uncertain environment, here, the Italian economy. According to the recent “option value” approach to investment, if differing degrees of reversibility characterize the accumulation process by groups of firms (small and larger firms), we should expect their investment decisions to differ under uncertainty. On the other hand, asset reversibility has an influence on firm financing policy, given the observed relationship between asset and liability composition. Assuming a different degree of investment reversibility for small and larger firms, we explore how they react to interest rate uncertainty using the Italian experience during the 1980s as a benchmark. The main result of this paper is that interest rate uncertainty exerts a negative influence on firms’ investment demand. The relationship is stronger for large firms than for small firms. Another result is that firm leverage also shows a negative relationship with interest rate uncertainty.
