2019 On-line fatigue alleviation for wind turbines by a robust control approach

Abstract: This paper proposes a sliding-mode based robust control technique aimed at fatigue alleviation of a Wind Energy Conversion System (WECS). The control architecture incorporates an on-line fatigue estimator, which can be used as a virtual sensor of the fatigue damage in the feedback control loop. This virtual sensor allows to evaluate and predict the potential fatigue damage by on-line processing signals such as the tower top acceleration (typical experimental acquisition) or the tower base bending moment (typical numerical measure). The output of the fatigue virtual sensor is fed to a robust controller aimed at reducing loads of the wind turbine components, and consequently fatigue stresses, by properly modulating the pitch angle. The proposed control solution has been validated on the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) 5-MW three-blade wind turbine model. © 2019 Elsevier Ltd

2019 Model predictive control for pre-compensated power converters: Application to current mode control

Abstract: Current Mode Control (CMC) is the standard approach to regulate DC-DC power converters in high performance applications, allowing to obtain a faster time-response and better closed-loop stability if compared to Voltage Mode Control (VMC). In the last decade, several algorithms have been proposed to improve standard CMC, most of them requiring to replace the original controller. However, it is common to have either analog or embedded CMC controllers which cannot be replaced easily in commercial power converters. Inspired by very recent results in the topic, this paper proposes a Model Predictive Control (MPC) external loop aimed at optimally modifying the set-point of a CMC loop to improve converter performance. The proposed configuration is directly applicable to any pre-compensated converter as it does not require changes on the already-in-place controller. Moreover, by leveraging a multi-rate implementation, the benefits of MPC are introduced in power conversion without affecting much the computational cost of the over-all control system, contrary to what would happen for a direct MPC implementation. Simulation and experimental results on a synchronous DC-DC buck converter, controlled by a standard CMC algorithm, confirm the benefits of the approach. © 2019 The Franklin Institute

2018 A Sliding Mode Observer-Based Icing Detection and Estimation Scheme for Wind Turbines

Abstract: In this paper, the problem of icing detection is considered for wind turbines (WTs) operating in medium speed wind region (region 2) and subject to a control law tracking the maximum delivery point of the power coefficient characteristic. Based on a robust observer of the rotor angular acceleration, rotor inertia is estimated in order to detect its eventual increase due to icing. Moreover, the observed value of rotor inertia can be potentially used for updating the controller parameters or to stop the turbine when icing is too severe. The proposed approach has been tested by intensive MatLab® simulations using the National Renewable Energy Laboratory 5 MW WT model. Copyright © 2018 by ASME.

2018 Fault-tolerant sensorless control of wind turbines achieving efficiency maximization in the presence of electrical faults

Abstract: This paper proposes a sensorless fault-tolerant control strategy solving the tracking problem of the maximum delivered power characteristic for a wind energy conversion system equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous generator. A previously published control scheme ensuring the maximum power efficiency of the wind turbine, not requiring feedback information about rotor speed and position, and about wind velocity, is here extended to make the control scheme fault-tolerant with respect to possible electrical faults affecting the equations of the permanent magnet synchronous generator (PMSG) in the original (α, β) frame. The control law is based on a number of interconnected nonlinear observers. Closed loop asymptotic vanishing of the observation errors is proved. The proposed control solution has been validated on the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) 5-MW three-blade wind turbine model. © 2018 The Franklin Institute. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract: The evaluation of fatigue behavior of wind turbines, that is of supporting structures, blades or gear boxes, is always performed off-line, by post processing experimental acquisitions or simulation results. Moreover, the evaluation of potentiality of smart controls, that have the aim to avoid failures by reducing loads and consequently fatigue stresses, is performed in the same way. In this paper is presented a tool that allows to on-line evaluate and foresight fatigue potential damage by simply on time processing reference signals such as tower top acceleration (typical experimental acquisition) or tower base bending moment (typical numerical measure). This evaluation technique is converted into a well know numerical code, oriented to control systems (Simulink), to be used into multibody simulation by co-simulation approach. This step allowed to verify its capabilities and the possibility to realize its physical prototype and to use its results as input variable for active control strategies oriented to minimize damage. As test case a standard 5 MW wind turbine and a classical control logic were used.

2018 Fault tolerant model predictive control for an over-actuated vessel

Abstract: This paper presents a Fault Tolerant-Model Predictive Control (FT-MPC) for a vessel featured by the presence of a greater number of actuators with respect to the number of controlled outputs, classified in the category of over-actuated systems. Over-actuated plants are usually controlled by a main controller in conjunction with a Thrust Allocation (TA) algorithm in order to guarantee the required control performances. In this work an unconstrained Quadratic Programming (QP) TA policy is considered in conjunction with a MPC to drive the vessel. The proposed solution has been tested on an over-actuated vessel called Cybership II. The main contribution of this paper is the introduction in the MPC of a fault tolerant action, in order to improve control performance in actuators’ fault scenarios. A Linear Parameter-Varying (LPV) model has been used to described the Cybership II dynamics and to develop the proposed controller. Considering this model, a MPC has been developed to drive the vessel, verifying controller performance in standard control scenarios. The proposed FT-MPC has been compared with respect to a standard MPC in actuators’ fault scenarios, considering several wave noise disturbances. Reported simulation results show the effectiveness of the proposed approach. © 2018 Elsevier Ltd

2018 Computationally efficient model predictive control for a class of linear parameter-varying systems

Abstract: The use of linear parameter varying (LPV) prediction models has been proven to be an effective solution to develop model predictive control (MPC) algorithms for linear and non-linear systems. However, the computational effort is a crucial issue for LPV-MPC, which has severely limited its application especially in embedded control. Indeed, for dynamical systems of dimension commonly found in embedded applications, the time needed to form the quadratic programming (QP) problem at each time step, can be substantially higher than the average time to solve it, making the approach infeasible in many control boards. This study presents an algorithm that drastically reduces this computational complexity for a particular class of LPV systems. They show that when the input matrix is right-invertible, the rebuild phase of the QP problem can be accelerated by means of a coordinate transformation which approximates the original formulation. Then they introduce a variant of the algorithm, able to further reduce this time, at the cost of a slightly increased sub-optimality. The presented results on vehicle dynamics and electrical motor control confirm the effectiveness of the two novel methods, especially in those applications where computational load is a key indicator for success.

2017 A unified observer for robust sensorless control of DC–DC converters

Abstract: Due to the large variety of converters' configurations, many different sensorless controllers are available in the literature, each one suited for a particular converter. The need for different configurations, especially on the same power supply, make it clear the advantage of having a shared control algorithm. This paper presents a unified nonlinear robust current observer for buck, boost and buck–boost converters in synchronous and asynchronous configurations. The unified observer speeds up the design, tuning and the implementation, and requires a memory cheaper code, easier to certify. Simulation and experimental results are presented to validate the approach in different scenarios. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract: The paper focuses on variable-rotor-speed/variable-blade-pitch wind turbines operating in the region of high wind speeds, where blade pitch and generator torque controllers are aimed at limiting the turbine's energy capture to the rated power value. Coupled design is described of an observer-based blade-pitch control input and a generator torque controller, both of which not requiring the availability of wind speed measurements. Closed loop convergence of the overall control system is proved. The proposed control solution has been validated on a 5-MW three-blade wind turbine using the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) wind turbine simulator FAST (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence) code. © 2016 Elsevier Ltd

2017 Model predictive control for pre-compensated voltage mode controlled DC-DC converters

Abstract: This study introduces the use of model predictive control (MPC) to improve the performance of pre-compensated power supplies, and in particular of DC-DC converters, by dynamically modifying their output voltage reference. The importance of developing controllers for pre-compensated converters is twofold. First, the hierarchical structure is particularly useful when the primal controller is already coded, or hardware based, and cannot be changed. Second, the double-loop and, possible, multi-rate structure represents a computationally cheaper alternative to a direct MPC that would replace the primal controller and would require a much higher sampling frequency. In this study a MPC controller has been applied for the regulation of a pre-compensated synchronous DC-DC buck converter. The aim is to improve the performance of standard voltage mode control (VMC), without replacing the linear controller and without drastically affecting the computational burden. The algorithm has been tested both in simulation and experimentally, on commercially available hardware. The results show the performance improvement with respect to the standard VMC, as well as the feasibility of the proposed approach in an embedded platform. Tests with different primal controller tunings, and unknown varying loads, confirm the advantages of the method. © The Institution of Engineering and Technology 2017.

Abstract: Ambient intelligence technologies have the objective to improve the quality of life of people in daily living, by providing user-oriented services and functionalities. Many of the services and functionalities provided in Ambient Assisted Living (AAL) require the user position and identity to be known, and thus user localization and identification are two prerequisites of utmost importance. In this work we focus our attention on human indoor localization. Our aim is to investigate how Received Signal Strength (RSS) based localization can be performed in an easy way by exploiting common Internet of Things (IoT) communication networks, which could easily integrate with custom networks for AAL purposes. We thus propose a plug and play solution where the Beacon Nodes (BNs) are represented by smart objects located in the house, while the Unknown Node (UN) can be any smart object held by the user. By using real data from different environments (i.e., with different disturbances), we provide a one-slope model and test localization performances of three different algorithms. © Springer International Publishing AG 2017.

Abstract: A Smart Wheelchair (SW) is an electric powered wheelchair, equipped with sensors and computational capabilities, with the general aim of both enhancing independence and improving perceived quality of life of the impaired people using it. SWs belong to the class of semi-autonomous mobile robots, designed to carry the user from one location to another of his/her choice. For such systems, the localization aspect is of utmost concern, since GPS signal is not available indoors and alternative sensor sets are required. This paper proposes a low- cost artificial landmark-based localization system for mobile robots operating indoor. It is based on Quick Response (QR) codes, which contain the absolute position of the landmark: a vision system recognizes the codes, estimates the relative position of the robot (i.e., displacement and orientation) w.r.t. the codes and, finally, calculates the absolute position of the robot by exploiting the information contained in the codes. The system has been experimentally validated for self-localization of a smart wheelchair, and experimental results confirm that navigation is possible when considering an high QR-code density, while QR-code low density conditions permit to reset the cumulative odometry error.

Abstract: Control and monitoring of indoor thermal conditions represent crucial tasks for people’s satisfaction in working and living spaces. In the first part of the chapter we address thermal comfort issues in a working office scenario. Among all standards released, predicted mean vote (PMV) is the international index adopted to define users thermal comfort conditions in moderate environments. In order to optimize PMV index we designed a novel fuzzy controller suitable for commercial Heating, Ventilating and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. However in a residential scenario it would be extremely expensive to gather real time measures for PMV computation. Indeed in the second part of the chapter we introduce a novel approach for residential multi room comfort control based on humidex index. A fuzzy logic controller is introduced to reach and maintain comfort conditions in a living environment. Both control systems have been experimentally tested in the central east coast of Italy. Temperature regulation performances of both approaches have been compared with those of a classical PID based thermostat. © 2016, Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

Abstract: ROS framework lacks of an internal tool to design or test control algorithms and therefore developers have to test their algorithms on-line, directly on the robotic platform they are working with. This is not always safe and possible, and a rapid prototyping tool can help during the design phase. Users can develop their algorithms directly on the controller board and safely test them in a simulated scenario. Although some rapid prototyping tools exist in the ROS community, none of them take Simulink® into consideration. In this work the authors provide an open source Rapid Prototyping tool which integrates ROS and Simulink. The proposed package is useful for control designers, who are frequently used to exploit Simulink features for control deployment. Abstract: In this chapter has been proposed a robust sensorless cascade control scheme for a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (PMSM)drive.ADiscreteTime Variable Structure Control (DTVSC) is considered and the rotor position and speed are obtained through an Adaptive Extended Kalman Filter (AEKF). The performance of the filter is improved by an on line adjustment of the input and measurement noise covariances obtained by a suitably defined estimation algorithm. The proposed solution is experimentally tested on a commercial PMSM drive equipped with a control system based on a floating point Digital Signal Processor (DSP). © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2016.

Abstract: One of the main challenges for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAVs) is to extend the endurance of small vehicles such as multi-rotors. Actually, Li-po batteries that guarantee a flight of about 20 min power this type of vehicles. The endurance can be extended by enabling vehicles to look for recharging station(s). In this paper, we propose a vision system able to detect and track a given pattern hosted on the target-landing platform. The pattern is also useful to estimate the UAV position while approaching the target or during the hovering close to the target. The paper focuses on an optimized adaptive thresholding technique that manages critical situations as changes in the scene’s illumination / shadows. The developed system runs at 90 Hz for processing a 752×480 grayscale image. Preliminary results on an NVidia Tegra Jetson K1 platform are also presented to distribute the computation between CPU and GPU.

Abstract: The goal of this work is to develop a smart light-emitting diode lighting system for industrial and domestic use with several advantages over conventional systems, namely energy saving, high reliability, and visual comfort of interior lighting. This is achieved by integrating a smart control module and a fault diagnosis and prognosis module within a conventional lighting system. The first module controls the lighting level in an energy-efficient way, keeping a desired light level where it is needed while regulating it to a minimum where not required; this is achieved by fully exploiting fuzzy logic and proportional-integrative-derivative controllers. The second module performs fault diagnosis on the light-emitting diode system and predicts when light-emitting diode maintenance should be performed; this is achieved by employing both hardware redundancy and signal-based approaches. Interaction between the two modules permits maintenance of a desired level of light even in the case of failures on one or more light-emitting diodes. The overall system has been experimentally validated in three different scenarios. © 2015 Copyright © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

2015 Sensorless efficient fault-tolerant control of wind turbines with geared generator

Abstract: This paper proposes a sensorless (i.e. not requiring feedback information about rotor speed and position, and about wind velocity) control technique solving the tracking problem of the maximum delivered power characteristic for a wind energy conversion system equipped with a permanent magnet synchronous generator. A previously published sensorless control scheme ensuring the achievement of maximum power efficiency of the wind turbine is here extended to consider the drive-train dynamics. A novel observer of the electrical speed, based on the electrical variables only, is proposed, and asymptotic vanishing of the observation error is proved, as well as boundedness of the observer variables. Moreover, it is proved that the derived control algorithm can be easily modified also to ensure fault tolerance with respect to a class of system faults, sensor faults occurring in mechanical sensors being absent because of the sensorless approach here pursued. The proposed control solution has been validated on a 5-MW three-blade wind turbine using the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) wind turbine simulator FAST (Fatigue, Aerodynamics, Structures, and Turbulence) code. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract: In recent years the European Union and, moreover, Italy has seen a rapid growth in the photovoltaic (PV) sector, following the introduction of the feed in tariff schemes. In this scenario, the design of a new PV plant ensuring savings on electricity bills is strongly related to household electricity consumption patterns. This chapter presents a high-resolution model of domestic electricity use, based on Fuzzy Logic Inference System. The model is built with a "bottom-up" approach and the basic block is the single appliance. Using as inputs patterns of active occupancy and typical domestic habits, the fuzzy model give as output the likelihood to start each appliance within the next minute. In order to validate the model, electricity demand was recorded over the period of one year within 12 dwellings in the central east coast of Italy. A thorough quantitative comparison is made between the synthetic and measured data sets, showing them to have similar statistical characteristics. The focus of the second part of this work is to develop a neural networks based energy management algorithm coupled with the fuzzy model to correctly size a residential photovoltaic plant evaluating the economic benefits of energy management actions in a case study. A cost benefits analysis is presented to quantify its effectiveness in the new Italian scenario and the evaluation of energy management actions. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Abstract: Since 2002 the European Union has seen a rapid growth in the photovoltaic (PV) sector. During the last two years incentives for PV installations were cut almost worldwide slowing the growth of the market. In this scenario the design of a new plant ensuring economic convenience is strongly related to household electricity consumption patterns and energy management actions. This paper presents a high-resolution model of domestic electricity use based on Fuzzy Logic Inference System. Taking into account consumers sensibility concerning the rational use of energy, the model gives as output a 1-min resolution overall electricity usage pattern of the household. The focus of this work is the use of a novel fuzzy model combined with a cost benefits analysis to evaluate the real economic benefits of load shifting actions. A case study is presented to quantify its effectiveness in the new net metering Italian scenario. © 2015 Elsevier B.V.

Abstract: Complex systems are found in almost all field of contemporary science and are associated with a wide variety of financial, physical, biological, information and social systems. Complex systems modelling could be addressed by signal based procedures, which are able to learn the complex system dynamics from data provided by sensors, which are installed on the system in order to monitor its physical variables. In this chapter the aim of diagnosis is to detect if the electrical machine is healthy or a change is occurring due to abnormal events and, in addition, the probable causes of the abnormal events. Diagnosis is addressed by developing machine learning procedures in order to classify the probable causes of deviations from system normal events. This chapter presents two Fault Detection and Diagnosis solutions for rotating electrical machines by signal based approaches. The first one uses a current signature analysis technique based on Kernel Density Estimation and Kullback-Liebler divergence. The second one presents a vibration signature analysis technique based on Multi-Scale Principal Component Analysis. Several simulations and experimentations on real electric motors are carried out in order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed solutions. The results show that the proposed signal based diagnosis procedures are able to detect and diagnose different electric motor faults and defects, improving the reliability of electrical machines. Fault Detection and Diagnosis algorithms could be used not only with the fault diagnosis purpose but also in a Quality Control scenario. In fact, they can be integrated in test benches at the end or in the middle of the production line in order to test the machines quality. When the electric motors reach the test benches, the sensors acquire measurements and the Fault Detection and Diagnosis procedures detect if the motor is healthy or faulty, in this last case further inspections can diagnose the fault. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

Abstract: This paper deals with the problem of fault detection and diagnosis of induction motor based on motor current signature analysis. Principal component analysis is used to reduce the three-phase current space to a 2-D space. Kernel density estimation (KDE) is adopted to evaluate the probability density functions of each healthy and faulty motor, which can be used as features in order to identify each fault. Kullback-Leibler divergence is used as an index to identify the dissimilarity between two probability distributions, and it allows automatic fault identification. The aim is also to improve computational performance in order to apply online a monitoring system. KDE is improved by fast Gaussian transform and a points reduction procedure. Since these techniques achieve a remarkable computational cost reduction with respect to the standard KDE, the algorithm can be used online. Experiments are carried out using two alternate current motors: an asynchronous induction machine and a single-phase motor. The faults considered to test the developed algorithm are cracked rotor, out-of-tolerance geometry rotor, and backlash. Tests are carried out at different load and voltage levels to show the proposed method performance.

Abstract: This chapter presents a control approach for robotic manipulators based on a discrete-time sliding mode control which has received much less coverage in the literature with respect to continuous time sliding-mode strategies. This is due to its major drawback, consisting in the presence of a sector, of width depending on the available bound on system uncertainties, where robustness is lost because the sliding mode condition cannot be exactly imposed. For this reason, only ultimate boundedness of trajectories can be guaranteed, and the larger the uncertainties affecting the system are, the wider is the bound on trajectories which can be guaranteed. As a possible solution to this problem, in this chapter a discontinuous control law has been proposed, employing a controller inside the sector based on an estimation, as accurate as possible, of the overall effect of uncertainties affecting the system. Different solutions for obtaining this estimate have been considered and the achievable performances have be compared using experimental data. The first approach consists in estimating the uncertain terms by a well established method which is an adaptive on-line procedure for autoregressive modeling of non-stationary multivariable time series by means of a Kalman filtering. In the second solution, radial basis neural networks are used to perform the estimation of the uncertainties affecting the system. The proposed control system is evaluated on the ERICC robot arm. Experimental evidence shows satisfactory trajectory tracking performances and noticeable robustness in the presence of model inaccuracies and payload perturbations. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2015.

2015 Electric motor defects diagnosis based on kernel density estimation and Kullback-Leibler divergence in quality control scenario

Abstract: The present paper deals with the defect detection and diagnosis of induction motor, based on motor current signature analysis in a quality control scenario. In order to develop a monitoring system and improve the reliability of induction motors, Clarke-Concordia transformation and kernel density estimation are employed to estimate the probability density function of data related to healthy and faulty motors. Kullback-Leibler divergence identifies the dissimilarity between two probability distributions and it is used as an index for the automatic defects identification. Kernel density estimation is improved by fast Gaussian transform. Since these techniques achieve a remarkable computational cost reduction respect the standard kernel density estimation, the developed monitoring procedure became applicable on line, as a Quality Control method for the end of production line test. Several simulations and experimentations are carried out in order to verify the proposed methodology effectiveness: broken rotor bars and connectors are simulated, while experimentations are carried out on real motors at the end of production line. Results show that the proposed data-driven diagnosis procedure is able to detect and diagnose different induction motor faults and defects, improving the reliability of induction machines in quality control scenario. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract: This paper deals with the problem of trajectory tracking of a class of bilinear systems with time-varying measurable disturbance, namely, systems of the form (x) over dot (t) = [A + Sigma(i) u(i)(t)B-i]x (t) + d(t). A set of matrices {A, B-i) has been identified, via a linear matrix inequality, for which it is possible to ensure global tracking of (admissible, differentiable) trajectories with a simple linear time-varying PI controller. Instrumental to establish the result is the construction of an output signal with respect to which the incremental model is passive. The result is applied to the Interleaved Boost and the Modular Multilevel Converter for which experimental results are given.

2015 Advanced control for fault-tolerant dynamic positioning of an offshore supply vessel

Abstract: The paper presents a solution to guarantee a fault-tolerant robust control for the dynamic positioning of an over-actuated offshore supply vessel. Fault detection is obtained by a combination of two model-based techniques: the parity space approach and the Luenberger observer. The dynamic positioning system is provided by a bank of reconfigurable Discrete-Time Variable-Structure Controllers (DTVSC), selected by a supervisor, based on a fault isolation logic. The control system is combined with a wave compensation based on a Multi-rate Extended Kalman Filter (MREKF). The proposed solution is compared with a standard Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control system and a passive nonlinear wave filter to assess its robustness to input disturbances and uncertainties in the model parameters. The simulation tests developed for a scale model of an offshore supply vessel show that, in the case of actuators faults, dynamic positioning is guaranteed by the proposed solution. © 2015 Elsevier Ltd.

Abstract: A method merging the features of variable structure control and neural network design is presented for speed control of a permanent magnet synchronous motor. The proposed control approach is based on a discrete-time variable structure control and a robust digital differentiator for speed estimation. Radial basis function neural networks are used to learn about uncertainties affecting the system. A stability analysis is provided and the ultimate boundedness of the speed tracking error is proved. Control performance has been evaluated by simulations using the model of a commercial permanent magnet synchronous motor drive.

Abstract: Rapid prototyping of control is one of the most important technologies for designers and researchers to shorten design and testing of control algorithms. This article presents power electronics opportunities provided by PSIM software and a high performance digital signal processing. The field of application examined is motor control and switching mode power supplies. In particular, more emphasis to the theoretical treatment of linear and non-linear power factor controllers has been given, and the performances of examined algorithms in both the simulated and real world have been verified. Finally, good matching between the results of these two configurations has been documented.

2014 Fuzzy logic home energy consumption modeling for residential photovoltaic plant sizing in the new Italian scenario

Abstract: In recent years, Italy has seen a rapid growth in the PV (photovoltaic) sector, following the introduction of the FIT (feed in tariff) scheme known as Conto Energia. In July 2013 the Italian government definitively cut FITs, leaving only tax benefits and a revised net metering scheme (known as “Scambio sul Posto”) for new PV installations. In this scenario, the design of a new PV plant ensuring savings on electricity bills is strongly related to household electricity consumption patterns. This paper presents a high-resolution model of domestic electricity use. The model is based on Fuzzy Logic Inference System. Using as inputs patterns of active occupancy and typical domestic habits, the fuzzy model give as output the likelihood to start each appliance within the next minute. The model has been validated with electricity demand data recorded over the period of one year within 12 dwellings in the central east coast of Italy. The tool has been used to evaluate the self consumption percentage to correctly size a residential photovoltaic plant in a case study. A cost benefits analysis is presented to show the effectiveness of PV-generation in the new Italian scenario.

2014 Sensorless power factor control for mixed conduction mode boost converter using passivity-based control

Abstract: In this study, a power factor (PF) control for an AC–DC boost converter operating in light load condition has been presented. A passivity-based current control able to operate in either continuous conduction mode (CCM) and in discontinuous conduction mode has been implemented. A voltage proportional integral-based control with input feed-forward has been implemented in order to increase PF and regulate the DC output. A current observer, suitable for both operating modes has been adopted in order to eliminate the need for expensive current sensor. The proposed mixed conduction mode control scheme has been numerically tested using a powerful software simulation platform and compared with classical CCM control scheme. Experimental tests have been finally performed on a real boost converter controlled by a Texas Instruments microcontroller in order to validate the results and to prove the feasibility of the algorithm.

Abstract: This paper considers the position control problem of an underwater vehicle used in the exploitation of combustible gas deposits at great water depths. The use of a single, time invariant PID controller may result in an unsatisfactory set-point tracking. To cope with this problem, a globally non-linear regulator given by the connection of a supervisor with a finite family of properly chosen PID controllers is here proposed. Each PID is designed to obtain a specific desired feature of the step response and the supervisor governs the switching among them to obtain an overall time-varying control law yielding a globally satisfactory output behaviour. The switching logic is driven by the numerical values assumed by some suitably defined cost functionals of output prediction errors. The performance of the switched controller so obtained is evaluated by numerical simulations.

Abstract: This paper focuses on a robust power generation control strategy for a variable-speed wind energy conversion system based on a permanent magnet synchronous generator. The proposed control strategy combines a robust observer of the aerodynamic torque with a sliding mode-based field-oriented control strategy. The robust vanishing of the observation error and the tracking error is proved. Reported numerical simulations show that the proposed control policy is effective in terms of optimal power extraction and it is robust with respect to uncertainties affecting the system.

Abstract: Permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drives are currently extensively used in many industrial applications, where continuity of operation and reliability are major features to be pursued. Indeed, a fault arising in an industrial process may produce not only safety problems but results in increased costs due to lost production. This chapter proposes the adoption of a robust nonlinear observer of the rotor angular position and velocity, which can be used for fault detection purposes. Convergence of such observer is ensured by the enforcement of a sliding motion on given surfaces, based on motor currents, which are of course affected by all faults influencing stator currents and can easily detect them. Simulations with additive faults have been reported, proving the reliability of the proposed solution. This edition first published 2013 © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract: In this paper a quasi-sliding mode control for a permanent magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) is proposed where a cascade control scheme based on a properly designed state observer provides accurate speed tracking performance. The ultimate boundedness of both the observation error and the speed tracking error is proven. The controller performance has been validated using hardware in the loop (HIL) tests on a simulator based on the model of a commercial PMSM drive. Tests show that the proposed observer-based controller produces good speed trajectory tracking performance and it is robust in the presence of disturbances affecting the system.

Abstract: An on-line prediction algorithm able to estimate, over a determined time horizon, the solar irradiation of a specific site is considered. The learning algorithm is based on Radial Basis Function (RBF) networks and combines the growing criterion and the pruning strategy of the minimal resource allocating network technique. An adaptive extended Kalman filter is used to update all the parameters of the Neural Network (NN). The on-line learning mechanism avoids the initial training of the NN with a large data set. The proposed solution has been experimentally tested on a 14 kWp PhotoVoltaic (PV) plant and results are compared to a classical RBF neural network. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.
