2018 Optimization Procedure of Four-Port and Six-Port Directional Couplers Based on Polygon Equivalent Circuit
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON MICROWAVE THEORY AND TECHNIQUES
Autore/i: Zappelli, Leonardo
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: A new optimization procedure for four- or six-port couplers is proposed. The optimization is based on the equivalent polygon network that is constituted by a kernel made by a polygon with N sides, as the number of the coupler ports, with N(N−1) /2 susceptances placed at the sides and the diagonals. The kernel susceptances must have proper values to represent a coupler with the excited input port matched, the other N/2 -1 ports insulated, and the output N/2 ports sharing the same power. The procedure permits to optimize the coupler in two steps. In the first step, only the diagonal susceptances are optimized varying the geometrical parameters of the coupling region. In the second step, four or six irises are placed at a proper distance from the coupling region to synthesize the desired susceptances on the polygon sides. The optimization permits to exactly obtain the power division to the output ports at the design frequency. Finally, the optimization procedure is applied to the transitions between the coupler and the connecting standard flanged waveguide. The proposed optimization is efficient because a few geometric variables must be optimized. Moreover, with the equivalent circuit approach, the synthesis of the coupler and the connecting transitions is two separate tasks.

2017 IDENTIFICATION OF EQUIVALENT CIRCUIT BASED ON POLYGON NETWORK FOR NONRECIPROCAL LOSSY N-PORT DEVICE
PROGRESS IN ELECTROMAGNETICS RESEARCH B
Autore/i: Zappelli, Leonardo
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: In this paper, a technique to identify/synthesize an equivalent circuit of nonreciprocal lossy N-port device is presented. The technique joins the classical procedure discussed in the '60s to the polygon network recently proposed in the literature, which permits to draw an equivalent circuit for reciprocal lossless N-port device in a very simple way. The identication is applied to two microwave devices, a reciprocal lossy iris in WR90 waveguide and a 3-port nonreciprocal lossy circulator. The proposed equivalent circuit could give some information about the agreement of the manufactured device and its design, which usually is developed in the hypothesis of ideal lossless components.

2017 Reconstruction of the S-matrix of N-port waveguide reciprocal devices from 2-port VNA measurements
PROGRESS IN ELECTROMAGNETICS RESEARCH B
Autore/i: Zappelli, Leonardo
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: Two approaches to reconstruct the S-matrix of N-port waveguide reciprocal devices from 2-port S-matrix measurements are proposed and discussed. The main advantage of the proposed approaches is that measurements are done always at the same two ports, without moving the device. The remaining N-2 ports are loaded with different loads, either matched or short. The first approach, based on a manipulation of the 2-port S-matrices, requires N-2 matched and two other loads, while the second approach, based on the evaluation of an equivalent circuit, requires N-2 short and two other loads. The measurement technique is based on standard loads (short, shift and matched) in the waveguide calibration kit of the 2-port VNA.

2015 Simple, Fast, and Effective Identification of an Equivalent Circuit of a Waveguide Junction With N Ports
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON MICROWAVE THEORY AND TECHNIQUES
Autore/i: Zappelli L.
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: A simple, drawable and efficient equivalent circuit is proposed to represent a discontinuity/junction with N ports. The circuit is based on N transmission lines connected to the sides of a polygon with N side. N(N-1)/2 susceptances are placed on the sides and on the inner diagonals of the polygon. The circuit modularity permits to identify the N(N+1)/2 electrical parameters in a simple way. In fact, the lengths of the N transmission lines are obtained solving a system of N polynomial equations and the N(N-1)/2 susceptances are obtained solving a simple linear equation system. The proposed circuit is used to evaluate the equivalent circuit of some directional couplers in the horizontal plane and of a 3D six-port coupler acting on the horizontal and vertical planes.

2014 Tuned Window for Standing Wave Linear Accelerators
Proceedings of PIERS
Autore/i: Leggieri A.; Ciccotelli A.; Felici G.; Zappelli L.; Passi D.; Di Paolo F.
Classificazione: 4 Contributo in Atti di Convegno (Proceeding)
Abstract: This paper proposes a dielectric window for Standing Wave Linear Accelerators (LINAC’s) which can be tuned after brazing and welding, in order to compensate the electro- magnetic alteration due to these production processes. This study investigates the in-frequency return loss behavior of the LINAC, in order to improve matching and transmitting conditions while maintaining the optimum coupling between LINAC and High Power Microwave (HPMW) source. Device design is single-frequency based and considers the dielectric window interface as an Input Matching Network (IMN) at the LINAC normal mode working frequency. Thus, design formulas are provided and Computer Aided Design techniques are proposed. A prototype has been made and tested by performing cold S-parameter measurements of a LINAC with the proposed dielectric window and with a traditional dielectric window. The proposed device offers more energy transport attitude over the traditional dielectric window, as shown by a return loss increase of 167% of the complete system.

2013 Circuit approach to the analysis of microwave discontinuities
PROGRESS IN ELECTROMAGNETICS RESEARCH B
Autore/i: Zappelli L.
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: An equivalent circuit based on propagating and evanescent accessible modes is discussed and the numerical values of its elements (susceptances and electrical length) are obtained starting from the knowledge of the generalized scattering matrix S of microwave discontinuities. A database of the circuit elements is then defined in the frequency and geometric ranges of the analyzed discontinuities and is used to evaluate the generalized scattering matrix for values not contained in the database, with very simple formulas for any number of circuit ports. The obtained S matrices can be used to analyze very complex structures such as iris-based filters and manifold filters.

2012 AN EQUIVALENT CIRCUIT FOR MICROWAVE DISCONTINUITIES
Atti della XIX RiNEM
Autore/i: L. Zappelli
Classificazione: 4 Contributo in Atti di Convegno (Proceeding)
Abstract: An equivalent circuit for discontinuities exciting evanescent accessible modes is proposed. The key feature of this equivalent circuit is its capability for simplification if a port relative to an accessible evanescent mode is matched, or connected to a very long line. Circuit drawing is simple and fast and is based on a regular polygon with as many susceptances as the sides and the diagonals. Each side is connected with a line of electrical length to the terminal ports and, if the port refers to an evanescent accessible mode, a series reactance is added. This reactance is the key to the evanescent part of the circuit because it is able to cancel the effect of the evanescent mode if the port is matched or connected to a very long evanescent line, reducing the complexity of the circuit by one degree.

Abstract: An equivalent circuit for discontinuities exciting evanescent accessible modes is proposed. The key feature of this equivalent circuit is its capability for simplification if a port relative to an accessible evanescent mode is matched, or connected to a very long line. Circuit drawing is simple, fast, and based on a regular polygon with as many susceptances as the sides and diagonals. Each side is connected with a line of electrical length θk to the terminal ports, and if the port refers to an evanescent accessible mode, a series reactance is added. This reactance is the key to the evanescent part of the circuit because it is able to cancel the effect of the evanescent mode if the relative port is matched or connected to a very long evanescent line, reducing the complexity of the circuit by one degree. With the help of the proposed equivalent circuit, we can define some approximating functions for the elements of a circuit representing a post in a waveguide, which can be used to speed up the optimization of complex structures, like filters or diplexers, based on posts.

2012 "Natural" definition of the modal impedances in non-homogeneous dielectric loaded rectangular waveguide.
PROGRESS IN ELECTROMAGNETICS RESEARCH B
Autore/i: Zappelli L.
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: In this paper, the definition of the modal impedances of the electromagnetic field in a nonhomogeneously filled waveguide is discussed. The presence of TM modal impedances, which are functions of the transverse coordinate, does not permit us to obtain a unique Z matrix of these guides. Hence, the evaluation of the scattering matrix can be involved. The introduction of a “natural” EM expansion overcomes this problem leading to the definition of a unique modal impedance and a unique Z matrix. This approach is applied to the simulation of the effect of a block of dielectric in an empty waveguide by “cascading” the S matrices of the existing junctions. Finally, this “natural” EM expansion is applied to the junction between an empty waveguide and a completely filled waveguide, obtaining an equivalent circuit which better represents the physics of this problem, and to the optical fibers

2011 Modified Dielectric Frequency Selective Surfaces With Enlarged Bandwidth and Angular Stability
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ANTENNAS AND PROPAGATION
Autore/i: L. Zappelli
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The analysis of a dielectric stop band filter is performed in terms of modified dielectric frequency selective surfaces (MDFSS). In fact, an MDFSS can totally reflect the power if a plane wave impinging on it excites a leaky wave, acting thereby as a stop band filter. Its relative bandwidth is about 0.5-0.7 % and it can be enlarged by cascading MDFSSs. The development of such a cascade is analyzed in order to obtain a larger relative bandwidth. Unfortunately, the frequency behavior of the cascade is influenced the angle of incidence theta of the impinging plane wave. In fact, if the stop band filter is developed at f0 for normal incidence, not only does it not maintain the same bandwidth for theta=/0 but it also moves its central frequency toward other values with lower bandwidth and loses its stop band characteristic in a range of a few angles. This effect, known as angular stability, can be mitigated by cascading MDFSSs resonating at different angles of incidence. In this case, the choice of the MDFSSs plays an important role and it will be shown that the relative bandwidth can be maintained in the angular range 0 -30°.

2009 Analysis of modified dielectric frequency selective surfaces under 3-D plane wave excitation using a Multimode Equivalent Network approach
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON ANTENNAS AND PROPAGATION
Autore/i: L. ZAPPELLI
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: In this paper, a novel modified dielectric frequency selective surface (MDFSS) is proposed and analyzed under 3-D plane wave incidence. Unlike classic DFSS, this MDFSS can easily be developed. The electromagnetic analysis is carried out using the Multimode Equivalent Network (MEN) approach. A new development of electromagnetic fields in non homogeneous dielectric regions is proposed in order to correctly define the Z or S matrix of these blocks. Results are shown for an MDFSS which ensures total reflection with a larger bandwidth than the classic DFSS. Bandwidth can be enlarged and modified by doubling the MDFSS. Similarly, two MDFSS can be combined to ensure total reflection for elliptically polarized wave incidence.

Abstract: In this paper, we present the analysis of periodic arrays on cylindrical surfaces using open-ended waveguide radiators loaded with radomes and Frequency Selective Surfaces (FSS). The multilayer structure can be used to obtain a filtering behavior by properly choosing the radomes and the size of the FSS apertures. The effect of the gradual cut-off properties of the cylindrical waves is also addressed and the design of a number of filtering structures including one or two FSS is presented.

2004 On the definition of the Generalized Scattering Matrix for a lossless radial line
IEEE TRANSACTIONS ON MICROWAVE THEORY AND TECHNIQUES
Autore/i: L. ZAPPELLI
Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: In this paper the Generalized Scattering Matrix for a radial line (rGSM) is defined. The main problem lies in the fact that, for a radial line, a unique characteristic impedance cannot be defined, since forward waves "see" an enlarging waveguide, while regressive waves a reducing one. Hence, two different impedances are defined and the usual normalization based on $\sqrt{Z_0}$, valid for uniform lines, cannot be applied. An equivalent network, representing the transformation between voltages/currents and scattering amplitudes, is introduced. The transformers included in this circuit represent the normalization of electric quantities. The transformer ratios influence the properties of the rGSM, and this will be discussed at length. The rGSM is then applied to the analysis of a linear taper and the results are compared with those obtained with Generalized Telegraphists Equations. Finally, a double linear taper has been realized and the experimental and theoretical results, obtained with rGSM, are compared, showing a very good agreement in a wide band.

Abstract: In this paper, the authors propose a noncontact sensor using the speckle phenomena for the assessment of target velocity at low vibration frequencies. The sensor is realized using few optical components in a very simple optical configuration. The methodology for the experimental and analytical determination of the sensor sensitivity is reported, and two speckle-processing algorithms have been used to appraise the best cross-correlation function for target elocity measurement. The algorithms are based on binary correlation and fast Fourier transform analysis. Experimental results coming from the comparison of both the proposed techniques are reported. Moreover, results obtained with the proposed specklesensor have been compared with reference measurement systems.

Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista
Abstract: The excitation of hybrid modes by discontinuities in rectangular waveguide can often be decomposed into separate LSE/LSM or TE/TM mechanisms, so that each component can be analyzed with the most suitable modal base. Correct interfacing, however, is required. We report the scattering matrices representing all the possible transformations of modal bases in rectangular waveguide. Such matrices provide an useful tool to simulate complex circuits made up of components strongly interacting, without requiring the use of a common modal base for the characterization of each element. Since the transformation matrices can easily include pieces of transmission lines, their use does not require any additional computation effort

Abstract: Considerable interest is currently being devoted to nonlinear propagation in dielectric slab waveguides for integrated optics and millimetric applications. Apart from a few specific analytical cases, much of the current work is numerically based, so that the qualitative features of the solutions are lost. In this contribution, we look at on the problem in the framework of a phase-plane approach, prior to seeking numerical solutions by, say, the Runge-Kutta method. As a result, qualitative aspects, such as “integrals of motion” in phase-plane do emerge from the analysis. Systematic consideration of these quantities narrows the range of possible solutions down whilst providing direct physical interpretation of the same. Particularly suggestive, in this respect, are the interpretations of the appearance of higher order modes and of the energy/boundary conditions constraints typical of the nonlinear problem. The approach is quite general and results will be shown in the TE and TM cases.
