Abstract: The growing market of electronic appliances is nowadays introducing a new kind of problem: the disposal management of a great quantity of broken or simply outdated electric and electronic devices. Sometimes the equipment contain dangerous or precious materials, that must be handled carefully. Furthermore, several good and valuable components on broken equipment could be reused. In this work, we present a Web based system conceived and designed to maintain all those information that can improve the end-of-life management of an electronic appliance. The cloud database can be easily accessed using the RFId technology, allowing the traceability of the equipment and the single components in the manufacturing, use, reuse and end-of-life phases.

Abstract: Rising crude oil prices and worldwide awareness of environmental issues have resulted in increased research and development of energy storage systems. Batteries are one of the most attractive energy storage systems because of their high efficiency and low pollution. Because of their high-energy densities and long lifetimes, lithium-ion batteries are increasingly used not only in electrical vehicles, but also in other applications. A key point in the management of lithium-ion batteries is expanding their energy storage capability and lifetimes. To achieve this, a fundamental embedded system is the battery management system (BMS) needed to ensure optimal, reliable and safe operation of the battery. Modelling and characterization of the single cells and an efficient simulation environment is fundamental for the development of an efficient BMS. This work presents a study of the statistical variations of the characteristic parameters of the single cells on the performances of a battery pack. The Montecarlo method on the SystemC-WMS simulations has been used.

Abstract: The mismatch of the electro-chemical-thermal characteristics of lithium-ion cells represents a critical aspect in the use and control of a battery pack. When the cells are placed in series or in parallel the effect of the mismatch between the cells causes degradation of the performances of the battery pack. This paper presents a simulation environment for the analysis of the performances of a battery pack affected by mismatch of its cell parameters.

2017 NFC-Based Traceability in the Food Chain

Abstract: In recent years, many events related to food and public health, such as bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE, commonly known as mad cow disease), dioxin, bird flu and swine flu, brought the issue of food security to the center of international attention. Many countries established strict rules to ensure the food traceability “from farm to fork” to meet the demand of consumer safety and to ensure public health. Consequently, the concepts of controlled supply chain, brand of quality and traceability of food products have had a strong evolution. Companies in the food production sector must evolve and change their organizational and management chain to satisfy increasingly stringent government rules and to respond to the requirements of the market. From this point of view, NFC (Near Field Communication) has all the requirements to become the main technology for traceability in the various food sectors. This paper proposes a solution to gather information throughout the entire food supply chain and bring it directly to the consumer. The architecture consists of a complex identification system based on NFC tags, which cumulates data during all phases of the production process. The aim of this work is to keep track of the information generated during food processing, not only for traceability purposes, but also for enhancing and optimizing production. The data generated by the traceability system are collected in a cloud database through apps on Android smartphones. The information is accessible by the consumers through a public Android application. The pork supply chain has been used as an application example of the proposed methodology

Abstract: Stress and physical activities are important aspects of life of people. Body reactions on stress and on physical activities can be very similar but long-term stress leads to diseases and damages the body [1]. Currently there is no method to differentiate easily and clearly between these two aspects in a time slot. We have confronted this problem while developing a mobile system for detection and analysis of stress. This paper presents an approach, which uses a long-term monitor with ECG/EKG capabilities and analysis of the heart rate data that is extracted from the device. The focus of the work is to find characteristics that are useful for differentiation between physical activity and stress.

Abstract: The market for lithium-ion batteries is growing exponentially. The performance of battery cells is growing due to improving production technology, but market request is growing even more rapidly. Modeling and characterization of single cells and an efficient simulation environment is fundamental for the development of an efficient battery management system. The present work is devoted to defining a novel lumped electrothermal circuit of a single battery cell, the extraction procedure of the parameters of the single cell from experiments, and a simulation environment in SystemC-WMS for the simulation of a battery pack. The electrothermal model of the cell was validated against experimental measurements obtained in a climatic chamber. The model is then used to simulate a 48-cell battery, allowing statistical variations among parameters. The different behaviors of the cells in terms of state of charge, current, voltage, or heat flow rate can be observed in the results of the simulation environment.

Abstract: The wide diffusion of Full and Hybrid Electric Vehicles is stimulating research on electric energy storage systems and Battery Management Systems (BMS). The Battery management system must ensure many complex features such as charge control, battery-capacity monitoring, remaining run-time information and charge-cycle counting. An optimization of the BMS can allow an improvement on security of the vehicle, performance of the engine, energy optimization and extension of the life of the battery. The main objective of this work is to develop a simulation environment based on SystemC to design and optimize the Battery Management System including a lithium-ion battery model and CAN communication interface. The BMS has been validated using real-world scenarios and data.

Abstract: One of the strong requirements of wireless sensor networks is the low power consumption in order to extend the life of the network itself. This constraint is even stronger for body area networks. Energy harvesting is an interesting solution that captures the energy from the environment. This work presents an electromechanical model of a piezoelectric transducer in a cantilever configuration. The model has been used to design and optimize an energy harvesting system, that has been placed on a running shoe, that can be used to feed energy for sensors of body area networks.

Abstract: The governments are investing in research on solutions for independent living, active ageing, at home health monitoring, with the objective of a significant prolongation of personal autonomy of older people. Fall avoidance and fall detection are important aspects of health care of ageing people. The proposed fall detection system consists in a wireless network with a smartphone and a board with another 3-axis accelerometer. The algorithm for fall detection is a part of a user friendly application developed for the smartphone. A comparison with existing fall detection systems and algorithms is reported.

2016 Energy estimation in SystemC with Powersim

Abstract: This paper presents a methodology to estimate the dissipation of energy in hardware, at any level of abstraction, with Powersim. Powersim is a C++ class library aimed to the calculation of energy dissipation of hardware described in SystemC. To this end C++ operators are monitored and a different energy model is used for each data type. Energy models are functions of operator inputs, constant parameters and variables, like supply voltage. The main advantage of this approach is that energy estimation does not require any change in the source code describing the hardware. As application examples, the computational complexity of a JPEG encoder, implemented in a FPGA, and a FIR filter, implemented in a microcontroller, are presented.

Abstract: Most of the speedometers on bicycles uses batteries. Batteries are polluting materials and they must be replaced. This paper presents an implementation of a self-powered speed sensor that uses energy harvesting to power itself, it measures the speed and transmits the data using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) to external devices such as smartphones. The energy harvester is a coil that acts as sensor, too. A prototype of the sensor has been built and a voltage regulation circuit has been simulated by using a SPICE simulator. Furthermore, a custom firmware has been designed using a Bluetooth Low Energy nRF51822 SoC by Nordic Semiconductor and the parameters of the BLE connection has been accurately chosen to obtain low energy consumptions. Finally, the energy balance between the harvested energy by the coil and the used energy by the SoC has been accomplished. The results demonstrate the technical feasibility of the self-powered BLE speed sensor for bicycles.

Abstract: While an old standard, the JPEG is still effective and used in many applications. Its relative simplicity is a clear advantage against its newest counterparts, i.e. the JPEG2000 and the JPEG XR, in many low-power scenarios. Moreover, features embedded in the JPEG2000 and the JPEG XR, such as the scalability of the image stream, can be added to the main JPEG core, making an encoder useful for example in a video surveillance wireless network. Nevertheless, the peculiar requirements of wireless, low-power scenarios require a dedicated hardware design, and a careful choice of the hardware architecture. In this work we developed several JPEG encoder architectures with full real-time reconfigurability, support for the restart intervals and for a simple scalability mechanisms, the scan scheme. These features make the architectures suitable for the use in lowbandwidth, low-power wireless networks. The JPEG encoder architectures have been developed, evaluated and compared using a cycle-based SystemC model.

Abstract: The analysis performed with Intravascular ultrasound Virtual Histology (VH-IVUS) presents some uncertainty and variability due to the methodology used, for example: error in the position of the section, error in the contour, error due to the fact that VH uses an average on 20-30 frames, the variations due to the analysis carried out by different operators. The effect of these variations on the measurements, not considered in the literature has been considered in this work. The effect can be relevant on the measured parameters and consequently on the predictive accuracy, sensitivity and specificity. A statistical analysis of VH-IVUS measurements has been performed.

Abstract: A low power Freescale board with a three-axis capacitive accelerometer and a with Bluetooth connection has been programmed and used in connection with a smartphone for fall detection in Ambient Assisted Living applications. An algorithm for fall detection has been developed using the in-formation of the accelerometers of the board and of the smartphone. The algorithm is part of a user friendly applica-tion for the smartphone developed for signaling the falling event.

2015 Energy-Aware Task Scheduler for Self-Powered Sensor Nodes: from Model to Firmware

Abstract: The self-powering paradigm surely represents a challenging issue in the Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) field. The chance of supplying the sen- sor node with environmental energy is attractive not only to make it au- tonomous and reduce the human intervention for battery substitution but also to improve the overall WSN flexibility and applicability. From this same perspective, a relevant role is played by the node task scheduling, which is required to face strong constraints due to energy availability limitations. On purpose, some of the authors have recently proposed an Energy-Aware ap- proach (namely Energy-Aware Lazy Scheduling Algorithm, EA-LSA), which shows a certain versatility in efficiently exploiting the harvested energy, re- ducing the starving occurrences in non-ideal conditions, with respect to the no-EA counterpart. In this work a task scheduler based on the EA-LSA technique has been implemented on a low-cost and commercially available platform, from Texas Instruments, with the aim to propose an open and easy-to-use HW/SW ref- erence for the community working in the field. The firmware, including the hardware abstraction and the scheduling routine layers, has been developed from scratch. Moreover, a few tasks have been developed so that the device activity could be simulated in a realistic scenario. To monitor the harvesting process an emulated energy harvester has been devised and included in the overall framework. The different task energy consumptions have been measured by means of an energy audit tool, specifically set up in order to properly gauge the very low current consumptions of the device. Experiments performed under different power income levels, allowed to positively conclude about the effectiveness of the implemented Energy-Aware scheduler, its flexibility in terms of environmental energy exploitation, and therefore its suitability for involvement in real-world WSNs.

Abstract: The widespread use of electronic equipments such as smartphones, tablets and digital cameras is largely contributing to the relentless progress of memories devices based on nonvolatile flash technology. Volatile memories, typically based on DRAM technology, are characterized by higher cost and performance when compared to non-volatile memories; in the design of an electronic device it is important to balance the utilization of these two storage solutions to meet different needs in terms of processing speed and long-term data retention. This paper reports the development of the system-level model of a controller capable of optimizing the use of NAND type flash memories, for the storage and the playback of audio samples in real-time music applications; the aim is the reduction of the quantity of system SDRAM memory thus lowering the cost of the final product, while still providing the user with the most highfidelity sound experience.

Abstract: The present paper proposes a methodology for extending SystemC to mixed signal heterogeneous systems. To that end, a method for modelling analog modules using wave quantities is proposed, and a new kind of port and channel were defined. This class library is plugged directly on top of the standard SystemC kernel, so as to allow a seamless integration with the pre-existing simulation environment, and is designed to permit total interconnection freedom between analog modules to ease the development of reusable analog libraries. Moreover, this allows for a uniform treatment of heterogeneous domains. To highlight all these aspects a buck-converter with digital control and an induction motor were simulated.

2014 A System-Level Protocol-Based Methodology for Noise Analysis of Digital Networked Systems

Abstract: Reliability and noise tolerance represent important requirements for electronic systems and in particular for networked systems, especially in critical working conditions. Reliability and noise tolerance mostly concern the communication tasks between the network nodes, which are implemented complying with formal protocol rules. The challenging target for a reliability analysis is to provide comprehensive evaluations and acceptably accurate results. However, the current complexity of the protocol and the complexity of the networks with many nodes make it very difficult to achieve this target. This paper presents a novel system-level methodology for noise analysis of digital networked systems. The methodology is based on a simulation and analytical approach capable to address a fast and comprehensive study of the reliability properties complying with the protocol specifications. As a test case, the MOST 150 protocol has been considered. MOST 150 protocol is currently widely used for multimedia networks in automotive applications.

Abstract: As the wireless networks utilization grows up and the technology becomes more powerful, the complexity of the possible applications increases. With the current hardware potentiality, it's unavoidable to make use of simulation tools to develop, improve and optimize the designed networks. Many network simulators are available, but they mainly concentrate on the protocol aspects of the design, i.e. they work on a very high level of abstraction. Rather, in many applications it may be useful, important or even critical to observe and manage at the same time high-level and low-level parameters like the power in the channel, the packet loss, or more specific network configuration details. In this paper we present a Bluetooth network simulator that let the user to work both on application level and on link management level. The Bluetooth simulator has been implemented using SystemC and it has been developed with the aim of modeling a real microcontroller-based device.

Abstract: The governments are investing in research on solutions for independent living, active ageing, at home health monitoring, with the objective of a significant prolongation of personal autonomy of older people. Fall avoidance and fall detection is important aspect of health care of ageing people. The fall detection system consists in a wireless network with a smartphone and a board with another 3-axis accelerometer. The algorithm for fall detection is a part of a user friendly application developed for the smartphone. A comparison with existing fall detection systems and algorithms is reported.

Abstract: One of the strong requirements of wireless sensor networks is the low power consumption in order to extend the life of the network itself. This constraint is even stronger for body area networks. Energy harvesting is an interesting solution that captures the energy from the environment. This work presents an electric-mechanical model of a piezoelectric transducer in a cantilever configuration. The model has been characterized measuring the acceleration and the open circuit voltage of a piezoelectric cantilever subjected to a sinusoidal force with different values frequency and subject to an impulsive force. The model has been used to identify the optimal position in which the piezoelectric cantilever has to be placed on a shoe in order to obtain the maximum energy while walking or running. We designed a circuit, that has been placed on a running shoe, that can be used to feed energy for sensors of body area networks.

Abstract: A common problem for ageing people is that they forget to take drugs at the correct moment. This can be a problem if they live in an independent way without other persons who can help them. In this work we propose the use of smartphones with Near Field Communication technology for medical care. The idea is to apply a tag in the box of the drug to be taken. The application in the smart phone indicates the time when the drug should be taken. When the user takes the drug, he approaches the smartphone to the box of the drug, and the smartphone tracks the event. With a simple interactions, which involves touching tags with the mobile phone, it is possible to manage the information easily. A user friendly application has been developed.

Abstract: Wireless sensor networks promise to become one of the most pervasive technologies in the next years. From Smart Cities to industrial safety and human health, from energy to environmental control, the potential of smart networks seems unlimited less until now. Some important features that a pervasive technology like that must have concern its impact on the environment where the installation is made, how easy installation is and the compatibility with existing technologies. All these factors lead to realize when possible, a network in which all devices from nodes (or routers) to end devices (or peripheral devices) are battery supplied and are as small as possible. In such a network, the batteries, the power management and the energy consumption monitoring, play a very important role like the network functionality itself. In this work we present a micropower MCU based battery monitor using a Coulomb to pulse frequency converter. As a result, we will show that this solution can be well suited in low power applications, like wireless devices where low power consumption and wide dynamic range are important characters.

Abstract: Pulse width modulation (PWM) is the most common way to control switching regulation and digital dimming. This paper presents a way to implement digital dimming by means of a dithered sigma–delta modulator with dynamic oversampling ratio. The system has been modeled in SystemC-WMS and implemented in a board using a commercial microcontroller. Simulation results show conducted electromagnetic interference reduction compared to PWM and flickering reduction with respect to classic sigma-delta modulation.

Abstract: The JPEG architectures in literature do not implement many features defined in the standard, useful in several wireless applications, such as noise protection, components management and the possibility to change a lot of encoder parameters. The addition of these features alters the computational cost of the encoder, and this could lead to problems when the power consumption is a primary concern. In this work we use Powersim to check the influence of these features on the computational cost of a JPEG encoder with some new features and for different implementations of some of its modules.

Abstract: This work proposes an autonomous energy scavenger battery-free switching power supply. A piezoelectric transducer is used to get electric energy from a mechanical vibrating source. Piezoelectric device has been modelled by means of its equivalent electric resonant model. All system has been designed and then simulated at system level by means of SystemC-WMS environment. The device make use of a full digital controller based on a Dynamic OSR ΣΔ modulator.

Abstract: This paper proposes a methodology for modelling and simulation of RF systems in SystemC-WMS. Analog RF modules have been described at system level only by using their specifications. A complete Bluetooth transceiver, consisting of digital and analog blocks, has been modelled and simulated using the proposed design methodology. The developed transceiver modules have been connected to the higher levels of the Bluetooth stack described in SystemC, allowing the analysis of the performance of the Bluetooth protocol at all the different layers of the protocol stack.
