2015 A smart lighting system for visual comfort and energy savings in industrial and domestic use

Abstract: The goal of this work is to develop a smart light-emitting diode lighting system for industrial and domestic use with several advantages over conventional systems, namely energy saving, high reliability, and visual comfort of interior lighting. This is achieved by integrating a smart control module and a fault diagnosis and prognosis module within a conventional lighting system. The first module controls the lighting level in an energy-efficient way, keeping a desired light level where it is needed while regulating it to a minimum where not required; this is achieved by fully exploiting fuzzy logic and proportional-integrative-derivative controllers. The second module performs fault diagnosis on the light-emitting diode system and predicts when light-emitting diode maintenance should be performed; this is achieved by employing both hardware redundancy and signal-based approaches. Interaction between the two modules permits maintenance of a desired level of light even in the case of failures on one or more light-emitting diodes. The overall system has been experimentally validated in three different scenarios. © 2015 Copyright © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.

2015 Embedded Control Systems for Performances Improvement and Energy Efficiency of Electrical Drives and Power Converters

Abstract: La domanda globale di energia elettrica è in continua crescita, al doppio del tasso di crescita del consumo di energia primaria. Un uso efficiente dell'energia, detto in altri termini "efficienza energetica", ha come obiettivo ridurre la quantità di energia richiesta per fornire i diversi prodotti e servizi. Progressivamente diventerà obbligatoria per l'utente finale una sempre più chiara transizione dal combustibile primario verso sistemi di energia elettrica e l'efficienza energetica così come l'integrazione delle energie rinnovabili diventeranno una delle principali sfide del futuro. L'elettronica di potenza svolgerà un ruolo fondamentale nel cambiamento di questo paradigma. Nella generazione di energia elettrica vi sarà un importante migrazione alle fonti rinnovabili come future fonti energietiche. Nel campo dell'elettronica di potenza, quattro ambiti applicativi devono necessariamente essere presi in considerazione quando si parla di efficienza energetica: motori elettrici, convertitori di potenza, illuminazione a LED e HVDC. In questa tesi è stata riportata una discussione dettagliata dei principali convertitori di potenza e sono state introdotte delle variazioni in alcuni modelli per rendere gli stessi più adatti alla rappresentazione del comportamento dei convertitori per particolari topologie o modalità di funzionamento. Sono stati proposti e argomentati alcuni controllori basati su passività per la correzione del fattore di potenza; essi sono risultati particolarmente adatti a scenari applicativi come quello del controllo motori o dell'illuminazione a LED. E' stato inoltre presentato un controllore PI basato su passività per il tracking globale valido per sistemi rappresentabili nella forma bilineare: particolarmente interessante è l'esempio applicativo riportato, relativo all'ambito del controllo HVDC. Inoltre è stato elaborato un controllore sliding mode robusto alle variazioni di carico per la regolazione della tensione di uscita nei regolatori DC--DC. Infine sono stati progettati degli osservatori di corrente per convertitori boost con l'obiettivo di rendere superfluo l'utilizzo dei costosi sensori di corrente in questa topologia. Ciascun algoritmo è stato testato numericamente e la maggior parte di essi è stata anche implementata su piattaforme embedded e provata in laboratorio con l'obiettivo di verificarne e valutarne le prestazioni. Le prove sperimentali sono state effettuate nel Laboratorio di Robotica Avanzata del DII presso l'Università Politecnica delle Marche, Ancona, nel Laboratory of Energy Department presso il Supélec, Paris e nel Laboratoire de Signaux et Systémes presso il Supélec, Paris.

Abstract: This paper deals with the problem of trajectory tracking of a class of bilinear systems with time-varying measurable disturbance, namely, systems of the form (x) over dot (t) = [A + Sigma(i) u(i)(t)B-i]x (t) + d(t). A set of matrices {A, B-i) has been identified, via a linear matrix inequality, for which it is possible to ensure global tracking of (admissible, differentiable) trajectories with a simple linear time-varying PI controller. Instrumental to establish the result is the construction of an output signal with respect to which the incremental model is passive. The result is applied to the Interleaved Boost and the Modular Multilevel Converter for which experimental results are given.

Abstract: Rapid prototyping of control is one of the most important technologies for designers and researchers to shorten design and testing of control algorithms. This article presents power electronics opportunities provided by PSIM software and a high performance digital signal processing. The field of application examined is motor control and switching mode power supplies. In particular, more emphasis to the theoretical treatment of linear and non-linear power factor controllers has been given, and the performances of examined algorithms in both the simulated and real world have been verified. Finally, good matching between the results of these two configurations has been documented.

2014 Sensorless power factor control for mixed conduction mode boost converter using passivity-based control

Abstract: In this study, a power factor (PF) control for an AC–DC boost converter operating in light load condition has been presented. A passivity-based current control able to operate in either continuous conduction mode (CCM) and in discontinuous conduction mode has been implemented. A voltage proportional integral-based control with input feed-forward has been implemented in order to increase PF and regulate the DC output. A current observer, suitable for both operating modes has been adopted in order to eliminate the need for expensive current sensor. The proposed mixed conduction mode control scheme has been numerically tested using a powerful software simulation platform and compared with classical CCM control scheme. Experimental tests have been finally performed on a real boost converter controlled by a Texas Instruments microcontroller in order to validate the results and to prove the feasibility of the algorithm.

Abstract: An on-line prediction algorithm able to estimate, over a determined time horizon, the solar irradiation of a specific site is considered. The learning algorithm is based on Radial Basis Function (RBF) networks and combines the growing criterion and the pruning strategy of the minimal resource allocating network technique. An adaptive extended Kalman filter is used to update all the parameters of the Neural Network (NN). The on-line learning mechanism avoids the initial training of the NN with a large data set. The proposed solution has been experimentally tested on a 14 kWp PhotoVoltaic (PV) plant and results are compared to a classical RBF neural network. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2013.

2012 Stereophonic Hands-Free Communication System based on Microphone Array Fixed Beamforming: Real-Time Implementation and Evaluation

Abstract: In this article, the authors propose an optimally designed fixed beamformer (BF) for stereophonic acoustic echo cancelation (SAEC) in real hands-free communication applications. Several contributions related to the combination of beamforming and echo cancelation have appeared in the literature so far, but, up to the authors' knowledge, the idea of using optimal fixed BFs in a real-time SAEC system both for echo reduction and stereophonic audio rendering is first addressed in this contribution. The employment of such designed BFs allows positively addressing both issues, as the several simulated and real tests seem to confirm. In particular, the stereo-recording quality attainable through the proposed approach has been preliminarily evaluated by means of subjective listening tests. Moreover, the overall system robustness against microphone array imperfections and noise presence has been experimentally evaluated. This allowed the authors to implement a real hands-free communication system in which the usage of the proposed beamforming technique has proven its superiority with respect to the usual two-microphone one in terms of echo reduction, and guaranteeing a comparable spatial image. Moreover, the proposed framework requires a low computational cost increment with regard to the baseline approach, since only few extra filtering operations with short filters need to be executed. Nevertheless, according to the performed simulations, the BF-based SAEC configuration seems to not require the signal decorrelation module, resulting in an overall computational saving.

Abstract: In many application fields such as home, industry, environment and health, different Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) applications have been developed to solve management problems with smart implementations. This approach can be applied in the filed of solid waste management. In this paper a new architecture is proposed with the aim to improve the on-site handling and transfer optimization in the waste management process. The system architecture is based on sensor nodes and makes use of Data Transfer Nodes (DTN) in order to provide to a remote server the retrieved data measurements from the garbage bins filling. A remote monitoring solution has been implemented, providing user the possibility to interact with the system by using a web browser. Several activities with the aim to provide a Decision Support System (DSS) able to find solutions for resources organization problems linked to solid waste management have been started.

Abstract: Hands-free communications systems require to primarily reduce the impact of the inevitably occurring acoustic echo. Moreover, in the recent past, a certain attention has been devoted to algorithmic frameworks able to provide stereophonic acoustic rendering and so augmenting the pleasantness of the audio-conference experience. In this paper the authors propose an optimally designed fixed Beamformer (BF) based solution for Stereophonic Acoustic Echo Cancellation (SAEC), with a twofold objective in mind: reducing the echo power and maximize the stereophonic spatial feeling. Up to the author's knowledge this is new to the literature and the achieved experimental results seem to confirm the effectiveness of the approach. It must be underlined, on purpose, that preliminary subjective listening tests have been carried out to evaluate the attainable audio stereo-recording quality. Moreover, the proposed solution allows to significantly reduce the overall computational cost required by the SAEC framework: indeed BF implementation asks for few extra filtering operations with respect to the baseline approach from one hand but make the usage of the decorrelation module unessential.
