2011 Experimental characterization of a surfaguide fed plasma antenna

Abstract: Abstract - The possibility of using a surfaguide device as plasma source for plasma antenna application has been experimentally investigated. The surfaguide was optimized, realized and used for the ignition of a plasma column to be used as a radiating structure: the coupling with the radiated signal network and plasma antenna efficiency were measured showing that a surfaguide can be effectively used to create and sustain the plasma conductive medium. A plasma diagnostic technique was also developed to evaluate the plasma column length and plasma conductivity with respect to the power supplied. These measurements highlighted that plasma antenna properties are strongly affected by the pump signal and therefore this signal has to be optimized in order to have the highest conductivity.

Abstract: The aim of the paper is the development of an accurate numerical model to compute the current density flowing through the heart of a virtual human body, and induced by an external electric or magnetic excitation. The model has been experimentally validated and then applied to investigate the main characteristics of the heart magnetic stimulation. This has been carried out by comparing the current density induced in the cardiac region by an external magnetic pulse with the corresponding quantity due to the more traditional electric source. Magnetic stimulation is studied because it offers some advantages: in fact, compared with the electrical stimulation, this technique is contactless and might allow the stimulation of a dressed patient. The design constraint of the whole system is represented by the current density, whose waveform and intensity are a compromise between the strength of the magnetic induction field and the pulse rise time.

Abstract: In this work, the shielding effectiveness (SE) of a densified-small-particles (DSP) cement composite, with different loading particles embedded in, has been investigated through the nested reverberation chamber facility. Particular effort has been spent in characterizing the SE behavior with the increasing drying and in improving the experimental practice to solve out previously faced measurement troubles. Findings are of interest in architectural shielding, microwave spectroscopy and investigation of physical-chemical properties of DSP materials.

Abstract: This paper concerns numerical computation of the specific absorption rate (SAR) of a human body exposed to a random field. The model has been taken from the ldquoVisible Human Body Projectrdquo. It is placed in a reverberation chamber (RC) whose internal field is simulated using the plane wave integral representation and which is numerically solved by a superposition of N plane waves repeated M times. This method is largely used for the electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) measurements and is also applied to calculate the absorbed power, and subsequently, temperature distribution of an object heated in an RC. In the present paper it is used to calculate the SAR at various frequencies for the whole human body and for some tissues, thereby recreating an environment which has characteristics very similar to the real environment that bombards us with dangerous radiations coming from different directions, and the field may assume random characteristics.

2008 Experimental characterization of plasma antennas

Abstract: Plasma antennas use plasma elements instead of metal conductors. They are constructed by an insulating tube filled with low pressure gases: the plasma is rapidly created and destroyed applying proper radio frequency (RF) power pulses to the discharge tube so that the antenna is switched on and off. When the antenna is off, the plasma is non conducting, and therefore the tube is practically transparent, so if the antenna is used into an array configuration, its presence does not affect the radiation pattern of the other elements. When the plasma is on, it exhibits a high conductivity, providing a conducting medium for the applied RF signal. The main advantage in using plasma antennas instead of metallic elements is that they allow an electrical rather than mechanical control. In particular, for military applications the possibility to have conducting elements only when the useful signal needs to be transmitted make difficult the antenna detection by hostile radars. Moreover, a plasma antenna array can be rapidly reconfigured, to change the radiation pattern, without suffering perturbation from the unused element. Finally, the antenna effective length can be changed controlling the applied RF energy, allowing to vary its resonance frequency and therefore the useful bandwidth is increased. Recently, the physical properties of plasma antennas were investigated [1], showing the relationship between the plasma density and the applied power. The noise generation was also investigated. In the present work, a plasma antenna is characterised for the application in the VHF range. A test bench is set up to control both the delivered power at the exciting frequency and the power used to transmit the useful signal. The problem related to the load change passing from the “on” to the “off” condition is highlighted, together with the issue of the crosstalk between the pump and the signal circuits. The efficiency of the antenna is determined comparing its radiation pattern with that of a metallic antenna.

Abstract: Abstract—This paper presents two test benches for the characterization of a plasma column used as a radiating element. In particular, the main parameters to be quantified are the efficiency of the plasma antenna, the turn-on time of the column, and the conductivity of the plasma. The first two parameters are evaluated by measuring the field radiated by the plasma antenna compared with that of an equivalent copper antenna. For the conductivity, a reflectometric technique is used, wherein the plasma column is inserted inside a waveguide. The accuracy of the method is limited by the ill-conditioned relationship between the reflection coefficient and the plasma conductivity; nevertheless, it is sufficient to subdivide the range of the conductivity values into three regions (i.e., low, medium, and high conductivities) to determine the best operating conditions of the antenna.

Abstract: The paper deals about the reverberation chamber (RC) method applied to the immunity analysis of Power Line Communication (PLC) systems for aircraft applications. More precisely, this testing method is modeled by a home-made Finite Difference Time domain (FDTD) numerical tool. Both the testing environment (RC) and the device under test (PLC network) are complex systems and their interaction requires a complete description of the RC field in a statistical sense and an accurate representation of the PLC network including cables and enclosures. The RC well represents an aircraft cabin, where multiple wall reflections affect the field propagation. A realistic structure has been fabricated to experimentally validate the numerical approach.

Abstract: This paper presents a shielding effectiveness evaluation of densified with small particle (DSP) cement composite at microwave frequencies by means of an improved nested reverberation chamber (NRC) technique, more faster than the classical one. In fact, the mechanical stirring inside the inner chamber was replaced by the frequency stirring method (FS) and only one scattering parameter was acquired to estimate both empty and loaded aperture. By this method, the stirrer movement becomes unnecessary. A software was used to manage the measurement and the post-processing operations.

Abstract: Portable Electronic Devices (PEDs) are nowadays available on the market and will be potentially used during aircraft °ights. As a consequence a more extensive use of mobile phones, laptop, wireless systems, CD player, etc. is predictable (at least accidentally) in the next few years. Moreover, the bandwidth covered by existing PEDs available on the market is increasing year after year. The main intrinsic features of PEDs which have to be taken into account for the interference problem are the emitted power and the working frequency bandwidth. When PEDs works inside an aircraft, di®erent phenomena occur that give rise to a coupling with antennas and/or electronic equipments through cables and apertures. For this potential coupling risk, the use of PEDs are forbidden during the take o® and landing phases. To make sure that the use of PEDs is under control, it may be useful to install special detectors able to advise for the presence of working devices. A proper design of such detectors cannot leave the PED radiated emission characterization out of consideration. Beside the traditional anechoic chamber test facility, the radiated emission measurement can be carried out inside a reverberation chamber (RC). This situation is completely di®erent from the traditional one, and appears much more meaningful for the type of problem that is being faced: since the orientation of the PED, during its illicit use, is random, also the ¯eld intensity at the detector position will be characterized by this random characteristic. Moreover, inside the aircraft the energy emitted by the PED su®ers several re°ections before reaching the detector. In this sense, the RC is the environment most suitable to reproduce this kind of propagation, because in a ideal chamber the ¯eld can be described as a proper summation of in¯nite plane waves coming from any direction, with any polarization and arbitrary phase. The reverberation chamber quickly provides the radiated power and statistics of the ¯eld without having to rotate the equipment. In this way the measurement procedure is easier. Recently, it has been also demonstrated the possibility to simulate absorption e®ects inside an aircraft using a properly loaded reverberation chamber. For these reasons, an RC has been used to determine the total radiated power of typical PEDs, according to the set-up of Fig. 1. The novelty of the proposed method essentially lies in the power determination, which is independent from the device observation direction. The electric ¯eld determination required the directivity knowledge, which is a deterministic quantity in free space, but assumes a statistic meaning inside an aircraft for the above mentioned considerations. To establish a threshold for a security detection system, the most probable directivity value can be adopted, ¯xing a distance for the detector.

Abstract: The plasma antenna considered in this paper is a standard glass °uorescent tube; the gas inside the dielectric cylinder is ionized by application of a strong electric field at microwave frequency at one termination of the tube. The main task of this section is the description of the characteristics for a surfaguide device; this structure is able to excite a surface wave that propagated along the tube axis and provides the power required to ignite the plasma. This is not the only way that can be used to energize the plasma, but it was chosen because of some advantages that can be favourably considered in designing plasma antennas. The ¯rst advantage is related to the exciting frequency adopted as pump signal, fp = 2450 MHz. This frequency does not interfere with telecommunication systems, and at this frequency high power is available at low cost. Therefore the surfaguide is the most suitable device to propagate a power signal at this frequency, con¯ning its electromagnetic ¯eld in a closed structure. Moreover the surfaguide is simple to realize, and matching stubs can be easily inserted in the design. The surfaguide consists of two trunks of a standard waveguide WR340, two transitions , and a waveguide with a reduced height to increase the electric ¯eld strength. The guide is terminated by a moving short, whose length can be varied for matching. Along the central axis of the reduced height guide two holes allow to insert the glass tube. A commercial software was used to optimize the structure for plasma ignition, in the sense that all geometrical parameters were determined for the maximum ¯eld strength along the axis of the glass tube. The experimental results are very satisfactory and will be presented at the Conference.

Abstract: The aim of the present work is to investigate the influence of the high level currents injected by an external defibrillator in a pacemaker (PMK) placed in the human trunk. A modified version of the Scalar Potential Finite Difference algorithm has been used. A network of impedances simulates the human body obtained by the Visible Human Project data. A structure for the PMK leads has been developed for the bipolar case as well as for the unipolar case. Then, a direct comparison between them has been performed. Numerical results show that the parasitic voltages induced by the discharge are ten times greater than those of natural heart signal. Furthermore, the problem of the heart tissue burning has been discussed. It may rise because of the leads heating due to the strong defibrillation currents.

Abstract: The paper addresses the issue of the protection of data-carrying unit of a RFID system during a microwave disinfestations treatment of industrial wood pallets. This process is carried out using microwave reverberation chambers, which represents an efficient alternative to traditional methods, also considering the velocity of the treatment. As required by safety standards, the history of the pallet must be at disposal of the user at any time, and this can be easily accomplished mounting a transponder on the pallet itself to store and retrieve its data by the contactless reader of the RFID system. The protection, against the microwave energy, of the transponder mounted on the pallet can be assured inserting it inside a selective shield that allows its operation at the working frequency. To enhance the efficiency of this selective shielding, the RFID working frequency must be chosen as low as possible. Three different solutions has been investigated in the paper: the use of aluminium thin foils, the use of a conductive elastomer and the use of conductive plastic compounds. The evaluation of these solutions has been carried out considering their loading effects on the transponder coil, their shielding efficiency in the microwave region and the compatibility between the temperature reached during the pallet treatment and the safety of the internal electronic chip. The plastic metallised compound has resulted the most suitable for the presented application.

Abstract: Abstract: The coupling between a two-wire transmission line and the electromagnetic field inside a reverberation chamber is analysed. The chamber field is represented by the superposition of plane waves with random incidence. The signal, induced along the line by such a field, is analytically found under general load conditions for the line, including a strong mismatching. Therefore this approach allows the parasitic elements introduced by real terminations and by measuring sensors to be accounted for. The statistics of the current flowing into the line load are analysed in terms of the cumulative distribution function and in terms of the maximum-to-mean ratio, an important parameter in immunity tests. All results are compared with those experimentally obtained in a real reverberation chamber, showing a satisfactory agreement; a discussion about the overall measurement uncertainty is also reported. Finally, some advantages of the use of reverberation chambers for immunity tests are highlighted.

Abstract: Abstract—This paper concerns the comparison between reverberation chamber (RC) and anechoic chamber (AC) measurements: In particular, the case of an immunity test is considered. A two-wire transmission line is adopted as a device under test (DUT), and the current induced on the line by the external field is monitored to construct a possible susceptibility profile. Both the averaged current over stirrer rotation and the maximum current are considered to show how robust the RC measurement is against the positioning and the orientation of the DUT inside the chamber. As expected from theory, the maximum value is related to the average one by means of the number of the independent positions of the stirrer. Finally, it is highlighted how in the RC it is possible to lose some worst case situations, related to a particular incident field polarization and incoming direction, and the underestimation of the induced current depends upon the chosen number of stirrer positions.

Abstract: The design procedure for a switching beam antenna for wireless communication systems is given. The antenna can rotate the beam over the whole azimuthal angle exploiting its geometrical and electrical cylindrical symmetry. The required directivity and the beam rotation are provided by a sequential insertion of metallic posts into the radial waveguide that forms the main body of the antenna. The first stage of the design involves setting up the dimensions of an omnidirectional antenna, to which the desired directivity is subsequently provided. After optimization to maximize the impedance bandwidth, the final antenna was prototyped. A comparison between simulated results and experimental data is presented.

2005 Reducing SMPS Conducted Emissions with Three-Winding Transformers

Abstract: Besides a traditional two-winding transformer, a three winding version was analyzed as well. Multiwinding transformers typically are used to achieve several output voltages. In the case presented here, the third winding was used to create a shield to reduce the conducted emissions from an SMPS. The shielding effect was obtained through appropriate connection to the primary winding. This is a quick and economical way to generate a shield; production time is not appreciably increased. The equivalent circuit was optimized for use in the PSpice circuit simulator. The simulation of a flyback SMPS allowed the benefits obtained by using the shielded transformer, with respect to conducted emissions, to be evaluated. All simulations were validated experimentally and shown to be in satisfactory agreement with real-world results.

Abstract: Abstract: This paper analyses the performance of the time domain reflectometry (TDR) technique when it is applied to the location of faults on cables. Different types of defects, which can arise on coaxial cables, are modelled and their reflection coefficients are calculated. The results, validated by experimental data, are compared to the typical noise that affects this kind of measurement to assess the sensitivity of the technique. Shield damage to a shielded twisted pair and a shielded multiwire cable is also examined: these examples represent more critical situations because the effect of cable and mismatching losses limits the dynamic range of the measurement. In both cases, the TDR allows us to locate faults that strongly affect the propagation of the signal on the transmission line, but the reflections produced by small defects are often masked by the noise. A data processing technique based on the comparison with a reference measurement and the use of the statistical correlation are then implemented. In this way, the reflections produced by the faults are much more visible and an overall enhancement of the technique sensitivity is achieved.

2005 Realistic Modelling of Interference in Pacemakers by ELF Magnetic Fields

Abstract: Many experimental studies gave different proofs on the pacemaker's susceptibility by ELF magnetic fields, nevertheless it's still difficult to trace currents and voltages that invade the pacemaker input stage, determining in this way anomalies in the implantable device. Luckily, modern computational resources, joined to the detailed conductivity models of human body, with a precision of the fraction of millimeter, make of the numerical models a valid technique for the valuation of the various interferences. In this way, in the present work, a vectorial simulator was developed. It's able to determine, to compute and to plot the electromagnetic parameters (current density, electric field, magnetic field, voltage) induced in any biological volume, where a representative structure of pacemaker is inserted, all of this is plunged in a time-varying magnetic field. A numerical model of Maxwell equations were introduced and computing techniques for the solution of sparse systems were implemented in C programming language. Programs for the definition of the conductivity outline whether for the biological tissues or the metallic and insulating structures where also developed. Finally a powerful graphic interface were applied with all the capabilities of visualization that a vectorial 3-D plotter can offer with great effectiveness

Abstract: The paper presents a method for the extraction of the transfer impedance of braided cable shield from measurement of the shielding effectiveness using a reverberation chamber. The cable shield is modelled by a distribution of voltage generators related to the external current induced by the reverberation chamber field. The field inside the reverberation chamber is described in terms of a plane wave integral representation, implemented by a proper FDTD (Finite Difference in Time Domain) algorithm to calculate current induced along the cable shield. The knowledge of the shield current and the measurement of the cable received power allows to recover the transfer impedance, which is a local parameter related to the shield geometry. Results are experimentally validated.

Abstract: The authors present a method for planning a base station’s position in a mobile communication system taking into account both the requirement to minimise the environmental impact of the radiated electromagnetic fields and the requirement to assure a suitable quality of service, i.e. C/I ratio, coverage, efficiency, served traffic. The model is based on five functionals and the overall optimisation procedure is carried out by a genetic algorithm. As an example of its application, the proposed method is applied to an imaginary town, subdivided into areas with different constraints for the previously mentioned requirements. Results reported show the behaviour of each functional, as well as the global optimisation of the network.

Abstract: The paper compares the results obtained by several immunity test methods used in automotive environment. In particular, radiated field and current injection techniques are compared and in both cases the Device Under Test (DUT) is mounted on the vehicle and on a specific test bench according to standard requirements. In the case of Bulk Current Injection (BCI) also alternative techniques are considered, like that the Double Bulk Current Injection (DBCI) and the Electromagnetic Clamp (EM-Clamp). The comparison is carried out performing the tests on a real-life automotive device (an anti-theft system) and analysing the susceptibility profiles given by the various methods. The final goal is the identification of a possible correlation to establish the reliability of methods alternative to the whole-vehicle test.

Abstract: The paper focuses the attention on the modelling of transformers for the prediction of conducted emissions from SMPS. The transformer equivalent circuit component values are extracted by impedance measurements with proper load conditions. Beside a traditional two-winding transformer, also a three winding version is analysed: the third winding is used to realize a shield, in order to reduce the conducted emission. This is a quick and cheap way to realise the shield, without appreciably increase the production time. Finally, the simulation of a flyback SMPS, allows to evaluate the benefits obtained in using the shielded transformer. All simulations are experimentally validated showing a satisfactory agreement.

Abstract: Abstract—The use of current probes for the injection of wide-band disturbance in electromagnetic compatibility applications requires their accurate characterization up to few gigahertz. While the representation of the current probe with a simple transformer is acceptable at low frequencies, the spectral content of fast signals requires models which are accurate even at gigahertz frequencies. This can be accomplished directly by measurements in the frequency domain (FD), making use of a -matrix representation of the probe, or in the time domain (TD), recovering the transfer functions from the impulse responses measurement. Both techniques suffer limitations due to numerical and experimental problems; in particular, the FD approach leads to the solution of an inverse problem, with numerical instabilities in the high-frequency range, whereas the TD approach is not so accurate in the low-frequency range of the sought transfer function. The paper combines the two techniques to overcome these difficulties and achieve a better accuracy across the overall bandwidth. The characterization of a commercially available current probe allows comparison of numerical results with experimental measurements.

Abstract: The problem of the evaluation of the electromagnetic (EM) field radiated by an electrostatic discharge (ESD) current is examined, and an efficient numerical code for the evaluation of the radiated field is developed. The considered radiating structures, a monopole and a loop, are analyzed in the time domain using a modified electric field integral equation (EFIE). A modification of the integral equation was introduced in order to take into account the reflection of the incident pulse at the input terminals of the antenna, when fed by a transmission line. The reflected wave is very significant and its evaluation is fundamental for the comparison of theoretical and experimental data. The ESD current flowing along the wire is determined using the method of moments in time domain (MoMTD). From the knowledge of the transient current, the radiated EM field is evaluated by a standard technique. The developed model is the first stage of a project for the characterization of the measurement environment during an ESD test. All numerical results are validated by measurements and good agreement is shown

Abstract: This paper presents an accurate analysis of the effects produced by electrostatic discharge (ESD) inside a metallic enclosure, representing the metallic shield of an apparatus. The considered discharges are either directly generated inside the cavity or guided into the enclosure through a transmission line. The model, which makes use of a modal approach for the calculation of the electromagnetic (EM) field inside the cavity, evaluates the disturbance induced by the different kinds of ESDs on a victim line. The results both in the frequency and time domain have been validated by experimental measurements and highlight the effects of the resonant nature of the structure on the intensity and the duration of the disturbance

Abstract: An accurate design is necessary to protect the circuitry of orbiting spacecraft from the effects of a broad band disturbing due to electrostatic discharge (ESD), but this can be achieved when effective simulation tools are available. In this sense, this paper presents a very accurate model for the evaluation of the coupling induced in a transmission line allocated inside a metallic enclosure, representing the metallic shield of an apparatus. The model highlights the effects of the resonant nature of the structure on the intensity and on the duration of the disturbance; theoretical results both in frequency and time domain have been validated by measurements.

Abstract: The paper presents a method for the modelling of current probes, used in injection applications, up to 1 GHz. It is based on the determination of the S matrix of the probe thought as a three port network. The probe parameters are recovered by some measurements when it clamps a standard line, whose characteristics are theoretically known. The results pertaining the signal injected on a line using this model are compared with measurements and with the results obtained by a simplified probe model, based on a series transformer.

Abstract: Abstract—Tests against electrical fast transient/burst (EFT) represent a serious threat for modern high-speed electronics: besides the conducted injection of high amplitude pulse, a strong radiated field is produced during this test. The prediction of the effects of this test during the equipment early design stage requires the equivalent circuit of the generator: the output waveform into a resistive 50- load is not sufficient to recover the complete circuit, including inductive component and parasitic elements. These are essential to predict the disturbance produced in arbitrary loads, as the equipment under test can be viewed. This paper describes how to characterize the EFT generator by means of the measurement of the output voltage and current produced in presence of known loads; moreover, a procedure to calculate the current on the equipment power cord is shown, based on the use of a circuit simulator (PSPICE). Finally, the disturbance produced on different loads and the radiated field during the test are calculated and experimentally validated.

Abstract: A set of finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) numerical experiments modeling canonical representations of the human head/cellular phone interaction has been performed in order to investigate the effect of specific simulation details (e.g., antenna numerical representation and absorbing boundary conditions) on computed results. Furthermore, hybrid techniques based on the dyadic Green's function and the method of auxiliary sources, and on a hybrid method-of-moments-FDTD technique have been used to compute parameters of interest for comparison with the FDTD evaluated parameters. It was found that small, but potentially significant, differences in computed results could occur, even between groups that were nominally using a very similar method. However, these differences could be made to become very small when precise details of the simulation were harmonized, particularly in the regions close to the source point.

Abstract: The method of the current probe is used to recover the transfer parameters of coaxial cables. The measurements are carried out by means of only one current probe and using scalar instrumentation, resulting in a very simple and cheap setup compared with other techniques. This paper presents the relative theory showing that the assumption of weak coupling can be adopted; the results obtained for a typical cable are compared with that obtained by the triaxial technique and the line-injection method; a comparison is also performed with theoretical data obtained for the transfer impedance by several models

Abstract: The penetration of the field radiated by an indirect ESD into a shielded enclosure through an aperture has been analysed by a new hybrid numerical technique. In fact, the combination of the marching on in time version of the Method of Moment (MoMTD) and the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method allows to study more efficiently and accurately typical EMC problems. In particular, the use of the equivalence principle with a proper set of fictitious currents (accounting for the coupling) permits to divide the complex original problem into two simpler problems: the radiation of the source, analysed by MoMTD, and the field scattering outside and inside the slotted shield, studied by FDTD method. The validation of the model is assessed by setting up an accurate measurement in a well controlled environment using a network analyser. It consists of a monopole on a ground plane, fed by a voltage pulse that radiates a perfectly conducting box with a small horizontal aperture, facing the antenna in its near field region. The numerical results are compared with those from experiment and show a good agreement
