From the Control Systems Theory to Intelligent Manufacturing and Services: Challenges and Future Perspectives
The First Outstanding 50 Years of “Università Politecnica delle Marche” Research Achievements in Physical Sciences and Engineering Autore/i: Bonci, Andrea; Conte, Giuseppe; Corradini, Maria Letizia; Freddi, Alessandro; Ietto, Leopoldo; Ippoliti, Gianluca; Longhi, Sauro; Monteriù, Andrea; Orlando, Giuseppe; Orsini, Valentina; Perdon, Anna Maria; Scaradozzi, David; Zanoli, Silvia Maria Editore: Springer Nature Luogo di pubblicazione: Berlin Classificazione: 2 Contributo in Volume Abstract: Control Science has played over time and still continues to have a key role for the development of human society such that, in the XX century, it has been recognized as an independent discipline. During the ‘50’s, one of the first international scientific congress to address the area of control theory, namely, the “Convegno Internazionale sui Problemi dell’Automatismo”, was held in Italy, at the Museum of Science and Technology in Milan, Italy. In this context, ten years later, the Automatic Control group of the Università di Ancona was born. In this chapter, we want to revisit the main results achieved in the last 50 years by the Automatic Control group of Ancona focusing, in particular, on the recent achievements about linear and nonlinear control; robust, stochastic, adaptive and optimal control; model predictive control; fault diagnosis and fault tolerant control; aerial, terrestrial and underwater unmanned vehicles control; automotive control; switching systems analysis and control; underwater robotics; intelligent manufacturing and cyber-physical production systems. The contribution aims to provide the main challenges on these topics and their future perspectives. Scheda della pubblicazione: https://iris.univpm.it/handle/11566/279926 ![]() |

Application of Advanced Process Control techniques to a pusher type reheating furnace
JOURNAL OF PHYSICS. CONFERENCE SERIES Autore/i: Zanoli, Silvia Maria; Pepe, Crescenzo; Barboni, L. Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista Abstract: In this paper an Advanced Process Control system aimed at controlling and optimizing a pusher type reheating furnace located in an Italian steel plant is proposed. A two-layer Model Predictive Control architecture has been adopted that, exploiting a chemical, physical and economic modelling of the process, overcomes the limitations of plant operators’ mental model and knowledge. In addition, an ad hoc decoupling strategy has been implemented, allowing the selection of the manipulated variables to be used for the control of each single process variable. A profitable trade-off between conflicting specifications, e.g. safety, quality and production constraints, energy saving and pollution impact, has been guaranteed. Simulation tests and real plant results demonstrated the soundness and the reliability of the proposed system. Scheda della pubblicazione: https://iris.univpm.it/handle/11566/234564 ![]() |

Cement rotary kiln: Constraints handling and optimization via model predictive control techniques
Control Conference (AUCC), 2015 5th Australian Autore/i: Zanoli, S. M.; Pepe, C.; Rocchi, M. Classificazione: 4 Contributo in Atti di Convegno (Proceeding) Abstract: In this work an Advanced Process Control approach aimed to the control and the optimization of a cement rotary kiln is proposed. Model Predictive Control techniques have been adopted for the controller and a system architecture based on two optimization layers is proposed. A suitable design of each layer and their interaction policy allowed to improve control performances and to meet possibly variable economic goals. Simulation results show the effectiveness of the adopted control architecture and optimization problem formulation. Results of practical implementation of the proposed controller on a cement rotary kiln unit confirm the improvement of the performances in terms of energy efficiency, product quality and environmental impact when compared to the previous control system. ROAD project: Robotics for assisted diving
Proceeding 22nd Mediterranean Conference on Control and Automation Autore/i: Conte, Giuseppe; Scaradozzi, David; Sorbi, Laura; Zanoli, Silvia Maria; D'Ippolito, Filippo; Fagiolini, Adriano; Pelaia, Paolo; Rocco, Monica Editore: Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Inc. Classificazione: 4 Contributo in Atti di Convegno (Proceeding) Abstract: The activities associated to underwater diving are of great importance in many areas. In the second half of the last century, diving technologies have greatly progressed, but diving is still characterized by significant risks, especially for professional divers who works at high depth, and limited practicability. The use of robotic systems and automatic procedures would allow, as in other situations where safety is of concern (for example, in case of hazardous works or in relation to hostile environments), a reliable monitoring and assessment of the physiological conditions of human operators during their activities. Moving from currently available technologies in underwater robotics, the ROAD (Robotics for Assisted Diving) project aims to develop an intelligent robotic system which is able to supervise in a semi-automatic way the activities performed by teams of divers. Such system will operate by monitoring a set of physiological and behavioral parameters. The collected data will be processed on-line in order to evaluate the current status and to reconstruct the evolution of the psychophysical conditions of the divers during their undertakings. The project has been founded Italian PRIN (National program of Research interest) involves two groups of experts with competence, respectively, in the physiology of diving and in the robotic technologies. The coordinator group is part of ISME (Interuniversity Center of Integrated Systems for the Marine Environment). © 2014 IEEE. Advanced control solutions to increase efficiency of a furnace combustion process
ECC 2013 Autore/i: Zanoli S.M.; Barchiesi D.; Astolfi G.; Barboni L. Classificazione: 4 Contributo in Atti di Convegno (Proceeding) Abstract: In the present work the problem of the furnaces combustion optimization in petrochemical environment is presented. In particular, the paper is focused on the combustion efficiency that directly affects the operating costs of the plant. A preliminary study of the combustion process has been performed. A model of the system has been obtained by a black-box approach and limitations of the existing control architecture have been analyzed. A new control architecture, based on advanced PID control architecture, coupled 'cross-limiting' control logics and Fuzzy logic has been developed and implemented in a Distributed Control System (DCS). The major benefits introduced by the new control system can be found in its reliability and in its robustness to compensate the measurable disturbances that affect the furnace. Moreover, the proposed control scheme has been proven to be effective in the reduction of the O2 content in the exhaust of furnace gas as well as in the reduction of the fuel consumption. As a consequence of the O2 reduction a reduction of the exhaust gas temperature has been achieved thus further increasing the furnace efficiency. The total efficiency increase has been estimated of about 2.2% with a significant energy saving of about 500 k€/year. Finally, the reduction of nitrogen oxide and carbon monoxide concentrations in the exhaust gases achieved by the new control strategy, allows minimizing the pollution emissions satisfying the actual national environmental requirements. Application of a Fault Detection and Isolation System on a Rotary Machine
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF ROTATING MACHINERY Autore/i: Silvia Maria Zanoli; Giacomo Astolfi Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista Abstract: The paper illustrates the design and the implementation of a Fault Detection and Isolation (FDI) system to a rotary machine like a multishaft centrifugal compressor. A model-free approach, that is, the Principal Component Analysis (PCA), has been employed to solve the fault detection issue. For the fault isolation purpose structured residuals have been adopted while an adaptive threshold has been designed in order to detect and to isolate the faults. To prove the goodness of the proposed FDI system, historical data of a nitrogen centrifugal compressor employed in a refinery plant are considered. Tests results show that detection and isolation of single as well as multiple faults are successfully achieved. Scheda della pubblicazione: https://iris.univpm.it/handle/11566/154731 ![]() |

Thermal and Lighting Control System with Energy Saving and Users Comfort Features
IN PROCEEDINGS OF THE 20TH MEDITERRANEAN CONFERENCE ON CONTROL & AUTOMATION (MED) Autore/i: Zanoli, Silvia Maria; Barchiesi, David Editore: IEEE Classificazione: 4 Contributo in Atti di Convegno (Proceeding) Abstract: Building automation systems (BAS) provide automatic control of indoor environments conditions. Their primary goal is to realize significant energy savings, to reduce costs and to increase users comfort. In this paper improvements of the control system of a Building and Home Automation system previously presented by the author are presented. The system integrates energy-consuming sources for heat and light power supply, such as heat pumps and artificial lights with green energy-supplying sources like natural radiation and natural illuminance. In particular, in the present work, control solutions as a new thermal control policy, an anti-glare logic, and a logic for accounting of the solar radiation are introduced. This controller works satisfactory reducing the need for energy-consuming sources and it reaches good control performances and energy efficiency by making the best of the advantages of intelligence building Scheda della pubblicazione: https://iris.univpm.it/handle/11566/75432 ![]() |

Clustering Data Procedure for the Prediction of the Recovered Volume of the Light Gasoil of a Visbreaking Column
IN PROCEEDINGS OF THE 20TH MEDITERRANEAN CONFERENCE ON CONTROL & AUTOMATION (MED) Autore/i: Zanoli, Silvia Maria; Orlietti, Lorenzo; Astolfi, Giacomo Classificazione: 4 Contributo in Atti di Convegno (Proceeding) Abstract: In this work the model identification of a visbreaking column for the estimation of the recovered volume at 360 °C of Gasoil is considered and a filtering procedure for the selection of the identification dataset is presented. A high valuable product for the visbreaking process is the light gasoil; its purity can be measured by the recovered volume at 360 °C and, for control purposes, an on-line estimation of this property is very important. In this paper a new procedure for predicting the light gasoil recovered volume is presented; the approach is based on the use of a clustering Fuzzy C-Means algorithm for the selection of the input data used in the identification process. Results are presented which prove the goodness of the proposed procedure and the reliability of the estimated model in the prediction of the gasoil recovered volume. Faults Diagnosis for a centrifugal machine using the Mahalanobis distance
Proceedings of 8th IFAC Symposium on Fault Detection, Supervision and Safety of Technical Processes Autore/i: S. M. Zanoli; G. Astolfi Classificazione: 4 Contributo in Atti di Convegno (Proceeding) Abstract: The paper proposes a fault diagnosis procedure based on a model-free approach and the use of pattern recognition techniques. In particular improvements on the isolation capability of a Fuzzy Faults Classifier (FCC) previously proposed by the author by the use of the Mahalanobis distance as metric for identifying the most probable fault are discussed. The proposed approach is applied to an industrial multishaft centrifugal compressor located in an Air Separation Unit (ASU). In particular faults due to the wear and tear of the thrust bearing and to fouling of the compressor stage are considered. The case study confirms the goodness of the overall procedure in the detections of both single as well as multiple faults and shows the improvements of the proposed approach in terms of the FDI system promptness. FDI of Process Faults based on PCA and Cluster Analysis
Control and Fault-Tolerant Systems (SysTol), 2010, Proceedings Autore/i: S. ZANOLI; G. ASTOLFI; L. BARBONI Classificazione: 4 Contributo in Atti di Convegno (Proceeding) Abstract: A new approach to fault detection and isolation that combines Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Clustering and Pattern Recognition is presented. Single, multiple faults which may cause errors in the sensor readings and/or in the actuators as well as process faults are considered. Determination of the number of principal components is based on the statistical test ANOVA following the approach proposed by the authors in previous works. To overcome to the growth of complexity in the analysis of process faults that typically involve many variables, an automatic procedure for the isolation of the principal known faults has been developed. The proposed methodology which is based on Clustering and Pattern Recognition Analysis represents the new contribution of the present paper. The method is tested on experimental data from an IGCC (Integrated Gasification & Combined Cycle) section of an oil refinery plant to monitor a compression’s process. Results show the goodness and effectiveness of the proposed approach on process faults detection and isolation. Scheda della pubblicazione: https://iris.univpm.it/handle/11566/43131 ![]() |

Robotics techniques for data acquisition in underwater archeology
INTERNATIONAL JOURNAL OF MECHANICS AND CONTROL Autore/i: CONTE G.; ZANOLI S.M.; SCARADOZZI D.; CAITI A. Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista Abstract: The paper presents a procedural methodology for the cooperation, at various level, of UUV and human operators to extract, in a non invasive way, as much information as possible from an underwater archaeological site with minimal expenditure of time and resources. Traditional methodologies of exploration of underwater archaeological sites have been enhanced thanks to new technologies and the possibility given to the archaeologist to promptly have a global information about the whole area of interest. In particular, in the paper, techniques for constructing augmented maps of the sites are illustrated. In the present approach, augmented maps are made accessible in real time to the archaeologist supervisor by means of a friendly interface. This allows to inform promptly the operators about the actual progresses of the survey, so that corrective actions can be eventually triggered on line. Furthermore, the possibility to contextualize the present survey data on wider scale maps (GIS) significantly enhances the global situation awareness of the archaeologists by pointing out correlations with the territory and with other sites. The experiences gathered on several missions on different archaeological sites have confirmed that the developed procedures guarantee an efficient and cost effective automation of the marine archaeologists’ work. Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE),ISOPE with cooperating societies and associations Classificazione: 4 Contributo in Atti di Convegno (Proceeding) Abstract: The aim of this paper is to propose a technique for Simultaneous Localization and Mapping in underwater environments by means of acoustic sensors. The proposed procedure consists in the application of suitable Neural Network and Iterative Closest Point algorithms for objects detection, agent localization and map construction. General Regression Neural Network and improved ICP algorithms are implemented in order to process sonar data, to minimize the computational time and to maximize efficiency in localization tasks without using dynamical models of the agent. Experimental tests have been performed in a simple, structured static environment collecting data by means of a single-beam, mechanically scanning sonar. Results show good performances of the procedures in simple but meaningful situations. Copyright © 2008 by The International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE). Innovative technologies in underwater archeology:field experience, open problems and research lines
CHEMISTRY IN ECOLOGY Autore/i: CAITI A; CONTE G; CASALINO G; S. ZANOLI Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista Abstract: The exploitation of marine technological innovations in the field of underwater archaeology has been mainly associated in the past with the exploration phase, in a sort of “treasure-hunt” fashion. However, the combined progress in such diverse fields as underwater acoustics, robotics, image processing, computer graphics, and decision support systems has not yet been directed towards the need for underwater archaeological research. Starting from the field experience gathered in a series of archaeological cruises in the North Tyrrhenian Sea, in which the combined use of state-of-the-art underwater tethered robots and sonar systems has been tested by a multidisciplinary group, the paper reviews some ongoing technological developments that may be merged toward the final goal of fully automated detection and inspection of an archaeological site. In particular, current advances in 3-D acoustic backscattering measurements for remote inspection of buried artefacts and vision-based robot control methodologies for fine positioning and accurate site survey are described. Remotely operated vehicle depth control
CONTROL ENGINEERING PRACTICE Autore/i: S.M. ZANOLI; CONTE G Classificazione: 1 Contributo su Rivista Abstract: In this paper the problem of depth control for unmanned underwater vehicles (UUV) is addressed. The utilization of such robotic vehicles has gained an increasing importance in many marine activities. As the importance and the complexity of the tasks performed by UUV increase, the need for automatic control schemes that guarantee high performances in motion and positioning has become a basic issue in underwater automation. The critical point in the considered application is the reduction of the overshoot in the position response. At this regard, different control schemes, based on PID and fuzzy techniques, are proposed and their performances compared. Guide and Control of an unmanned underwater Vehicle by Visual-feedback techniques
IARP Workshop Underwater Robotics for Sea Exploitation and Environmental Monitoring Autore/i: S. ZANOLI; CONTE G.; SCARADOZZI D. Editore: International Advanced Robotics Programme, 2001 Classificazione: 4 Contributo in Atti di Convegno (Proceeding) Abstract: Manual guidance and control of underwater vehicles, like ROVs, is in general a demanding task. A great help comes, in this situation, from the development of automatic guidance systems that, taking care of low and mid level control task, may reduce the burden imposed to human operators. A system of this kind has been constructed for guidance and control of a small work-class ROV (DOE Phantom S2) by inserting a PC in the operator/ROV loop. The standard configuration of the control loop turns out, in this way, to be completely redesigned as a PC-based (control) configuration. The paper describes the basic features of the realized system, that, by allowing both on-line processing of sensory data and implementation of automatic control procedures, enhances the performances of the ROV as a robotic tools. As a specific application of the PC-based control configuration, the implementation of a visual feedback control strategy in a typical inspection mission (underwater pipeline’s inspection) is considered. Images from a CCD camera are processed at high logical level in order to extract information about the relative ROV/pipe position. This information is in turn used for generating and feeding back suitable commands to the ROV’s thrusters, in order to regulate the vehicle position. The system has undergone both field tests and emulation tests, showing a satisfactory behavior that is illustrated and discussed. Obstacle Avoidance with scanning sonar for bottom navigation
Unmanned Untethered Submersible Technology Autore/i: Zanoli S. M.; Affaitati F. Classificazione: 4 Contributo in Atti di Convegno (Proceeding) Abstract: The problem of avoiding obstacles when navigating near the sea bottom is addressed. A dynamic workspace representation of the environment is performed based on real-time dual frequency scanning sonar information. Suitable filters have been developed so to take into account environmental noise and the presence of false echoes. Real sonar data were used to evaluate the performance of the system. From the settled trials the ability of the system in avoiding obstacles has been verified Scheda della pubblicazione: https://iris.univpm.it/handle/11566/82885 ![]() |
